In the last several months, I have bought two new rifles, a 91/30 MN and a .303 British Enfield. I've bought 100 rounds or so of factory ammo for each, but it is almost a chore to shoot it. I don't know what is wrong with me. I'm just not really interested in shooting this factory ammo. I want to shoot cast. On the MN, I have shot 40 rounds and started loading that brass with cast and the other 5-6 boxes just sit on the shelf. I'm temped to pull the bullets, but feel like I would just be wasting the powder (And probably the bullets), but then again, if I just go throw them down range, I'm kinda wasting it anyway, huh? Anybody else feel like this?

no, when I'm shooting factory ammo I shoot it the same as I do when shooting cast. Have fun!

Factory ammo is the source of every 7.62 x 54 brass that I own. The jacketed bullets are too small to be accurate in the 91/30 and M44 that I have. On the other hand, I continue to find 50 count bags of new .303 B several times a year at various stores.

Range time is never a waste, and I have found shooting Privi ammo is an easy way to get good quality brass for loading 7.62x54r.

I just bought 200 rounds of PPU ammo for my Mosin just to get the brass. I look forward to shooting it.

At least they are fire formed well!

I'm with you milrifle. I consider shooting factory bullets to be desecration of a fine shooting instrument.

I am with ya...lol

I have to buy shotgun ammo... Cheapest I can find, just to get unknown primers for loading slug stuff.. So basically, I am paying 12 bucks for 20 primers.... Really sucks... Cant even melt the shot as its steel shot... I am gunna have to become a smuggler just to get needed primers....

I was gifted two unopened boxes of 35 Rem ammo six months ago. I can't bring myself to even open it. I should get the brass so I have a 100 or so of all the same headstamp.

I have been going through the same thing. 8mm mauser brass is out of stock everywhere, and I just picked up another rifle to feed. As luck would have, I was in the LGS on Saturday and the fellow had a mountain of Prvi Partizan 8mm for sale at 17$ a box. So I stocked up with three boxes and plan on heading back to scoop up some more.

After using my last case of corrosive surplus ammo , I was real happy to fire non-corrosive boxer primed brass in my Mosin . I got fortunate and landed some boxer primed surplus for the Enfield years ago and some of those empties are being used for cast now . All is not lost lad , enjoy every day you get out on the range . Soon after you can enjoy your time in the loading room . ;-)

How often do you get across to ANC or the valley? I've seen shotgun primers pretty often lately, at least out here in Wasilla.

Graf's has PPU .303, but out of the Russian.

Edit: Posted that last night from my laptop - hate the alleged keyboard on laptops (I guess that is the result of learning to type on a manual typewriter) and find it hard to type much. I should have pointed out that I was talking about new unprimed brass, not loaded ammo. Both are around $50/100 when they are in stock.

In my neck of the Woods 7.62x39 Brass is unobtainable unless I buy Lapua Brass at $111.95 per 100. Federal Eagle Factory or PPU Factory Ammo is $27 a Box, I have not found any cheaper options. Can't win either way ! I have seen Winchester Brass listed at $43 per 100 but it is always marked 0 stock no backorder ! I did not figure 7.62x39 Brass would be so expensive.

I've shot factory .30-06 just to get the brass for making .25-06. It's win-win for me. Range time + new raw components.

I do the same thing as far as shooting factory for the brass but if it shoots well enough and is a soft point bullet I'll save some for hunting. If you decide to pull the bullets I'll take them off your hands. Just let me know

Make 8MM Mauser brass from 30-06 or 270 Win. In my milsurps I cannot tell the difference.

When supply catches up, Graf's price for new Prvi Partizan brass is $40/100. Their old Lapua price was $61/100, who knows what the Lapua price might be whenever they get new supplies in. The PPU is less likely to greatly increase in price. But those two, along with Winchester, are out of stock now. And who knows when supplies will appear. Get on everyone's notify list and hope you have the money at the time and move quickly enough to get some when some supplies come in.

The reason I often mention Graf's, beyond often having a good price once shipping is included, is that they are Cast Boolits supporters.

Keep an eye out for when Grumpa makes his 8mm brass from 30-06. His brass is top shelf.

Yeah you're right about that. BUT, I've got nothing but time and the stuff I make is plenty good for old Milsurp Mausers. OTOH, had I been smart enough to jump on a certain 8MM Tanker, I mighta just had to spring for the good stuff. Dude you got such a sweet rifle there.........:violin:

I have a batch of 8mm I just converted from 30-06. With luck I will be out testing them this weekend.
It was definitely a learning experience as I had never done that before. I booby trapped myself as I neglected to sort the parent brass by head stamp. Some of them turned out way too thick in the neck. As of right now, I don't have the tools to ream them, so I culled those and chalked it up to a life lesson.
I had read that .270 Winchester is a bit more friendly to convert, but I haven't pulled the drawings on them yet to make a detail comparison.

I was gonna post that. That I was about to order a couple hundred rounds of 7.62x39 ammo just for the brass....but then I found some brass for sale. Phew , that was a close one. Brassmanbrass.com is the only guy I have seen have it in the last 2-3years.

7.62x39 = stupid odd size you cant make from something else.

Yep all the brass I've gotten for my SKS 7.62X39 have been factory PPU,PMC. Cause no one shoots brass X39 or leaves them for me to pickup!! Now just last week someone was nice enough to leave 100 30-30 Rem cases -can always use once fired 30-30's!

I had to shoot me up a few boxes of .35 Remington for my new Handi for the brass. I can get plenty of ammo locally but no brass!

I wish they could be formed from another case. I made me a few hundred .300 blackouts from a friend who doesn't reload's 5.56, which work fantastic so I'm thinking about selling all my once fired Hornady.

Making 8mm Mauser from .270 since I don't have a .270

.357 mag seems to be in short order so when friends want to shoot my wheel gun they buy the mags so I get the brass!
