I have to agree with RU Shooter some rifles are just meant for Boolits. I met one today. It is my M/N 44. I was shooting surp ammo. In a few rounds I said this is a Boolit rifle. I brought it home, cleaned it and slugged the bore. Chamber end is .3034" X .3121" and the muzzle end (in about 3") is .3035" X .3150". I measured the .3150 twice because it was so far off of the chamber end. I find these readings very odd as the land dimension is rather constant but the groove goes very large. Has anyone run into these conditions before. I will slug the throat but the muzzle end dimension is already a major problem as the largest mould I have is 314299.

The range was cold today but the wind did not come up till about noon. So it was a very good day.

I agree that they chambered the wrong end. This runs the Boolet through a "bottle Neck". Will loading a.315+ Boolet help, or will it swage down on the chamber end and be too small at the muzzle any way. I have heard it said by some that JB's can be shot through barrels a bit smaller than the bullet diameter and when recovered they are back to original diameter. I have not personally seen this.

Your limiting factor will probably be your throat diameter, which will limit the size of boolits that will chamber. You can gain a little by turning your necks down.

Why not just try sizing to the largest diameter that will chamber in your unaltered brass, and see what happens.

Not trying to be sarcastic, but the Moisin Nagant M44 is a battle carbine, not a match rifle. The sights are coarse and not easily adjustable for windage. I know some people are very detail oriented, and slug both ends of the bore as standard operating proceedure. Don't let less than perfect measurements discourage or upset you. The proof is in the shooting.

My M-44 shoots just fine with a .3155" bullet. A .316" bullet won't chamber. I swage 8mm Mauser j-bullets down to .3155" in two Lee dies, a .319" and a .3155".

I have loaded 314299's (.3134" sized .314") in front of 14.3 gr. of Vectan A0 (Herco). It is about equivalent to 13 gr. Red Dot. If we shoot on Wednesday I will see what happens. I shot surp with the bayonet retracted and it is a foot left at a hundred. Front sight will not move (yet). Boolets will make the rifle a lot more user friendly. If the M44 will ring the gong at 300 meters I will be happy.

you could try fire lapping with cast boolits and fine valve grinding compound. use a very reduced load to get 500-600 fps it might open up the chamber end.

I would get the book from Beartooth bullets on cast bullet fitament.

(Look at the left side of your screen and click on "book".

You will get a wealth of info for cheap!!!

Newsmokepole64 is right on.
I've used firelapping to correct inconsistent throat/bore problems. It will get you to where you have a bore that is tapering down from the throat to the muzzle. I cleaned up a .303 Brit doing this, and also removed the constriction where a revolver barrel was screwed into the frame. Both shot measurably better after firelapping. I started with 300 grit and went progressively finer.
