I have 2 on my bench and are very good machines. The case feeders are very good. Make sure cases are clean a free of any contaminates. The right shell plate size is important. I very ocassionally will have a jam at the drop point but getting the feeder set right when setting up alieviates this alot. I would recomend it to anyone.

the primer feed system is a bit touchy on the 650.
I finally just broke mine and made it a manual system, it actually goes rather smooth and is part of my operating motion now.
the case feeder works just fine [so did the one on the LEE I beat off the bench with a stool]
they seem to actually run smoother if you run them a little hard and fast.

Hi,
I think Dillon makes an excellent product, but sold a RL-550 because of primer problems. I now prefer the older manual RL-300's and 450's! Not exactly what the OP is looking for but see it as all related with Dillon's!

To be fair primer feed is always the "fly in the ointment" with progressives!

The only problem I have with the 650, is the primers run out to quickly.

I've been using a 650 for I don't know how many years. I did have a primer feeding problem that was fixed when Dillon sent me a new primer assembly. (The actuating lever wouldn't return so that the next primer would rotate into position.)

The only case feeding problems are with small diameter cases, such as the .30 Carbine and .32 ACP. These sometimes stop at the mouth of the feed guide. It hasn't bothered me enough to see if I can modify the guide.

Note that, stealing the idea from the case feeder on a Star progressive I used to own (never should have sold it), I bought thick-wall clear tubing with the correct inside diameter, cut it into 4-foot lengths, and load up a bunch with cases. The clamp on the 650 that holds the short tube if you have a case feeder works perfectly to hold the long tube of cases. The 4-foot length will hold 50 .45 ACP, 25 .223, etc.

I have had my XL 650 for nearly 20 years and never had a major problem Dillon didn’t fix. Keep in mind this press has been subject to heavy use for a long time.
Problem 1
I bent the base plate the shell plate mounts to. Not sure of the proper name. Case jammed and was a little over zealous on my part. Dillon replaced the part and has up graded newer presses to be thicker.
Problem 2
Broke advancing ring. Dillon sent me two.
Problem 3
Wore out primer advancing arm and return spring. Dillon sent extra parts.
Problem 4
Primer warning buzzer stopped working. Not a warranted part. $25 got me new one.
Problem 5
Left powder in powder measure over winter. Stupid on my part. Hopper badly stained couldn’t see through it. Dillon sent replacement.
Problem 6
Broke powder check. Again Dillon sent parts.
Problem 7
Wore out case feed adapter for 9mm. Dillon sent replacement.
And that is it.

I've always run 450s that I converted to 550s, I call them 550 (-) because I left the primer and powder mechanisms manual. No worries if I have to back things up. I once loaded a grand of .40s on the 650 of a friend because it happened to be set up for .40 and I needed them badly for a class I was teaching. The primer system gave me fits all the way through it even though I was using the primers Dillon recommended at the time. Since then I have had zero lust for a 650. Just my $0.02...
And WOW those 300s are gorgeous.

3 'Fixes' to make it run well:

1. Polish metal portion of powder hopper and bar.
2. Replace (or cut) spring under shell plate to prevent plate from snapping into place and spilling powder.
3. While getting powder charge dialed-in, remove primer advance cam to keep from sending new primers down the ski jump.

My 650 is being rebuilt by Dillon right now.
Did have problems with the primer feed, some of which were caused by ignoranus operator (me).
Im hopeing that when it comes back it is good as new.......no...........even better. The machine is 20 years old upgrades will be welcome

CH, iam sure you will be happy! I just called dillon today and bought a new xl-650, then bought marks stuff on ebay and the thrust bearing kit from hitfactor on ebay too. I ordered 9 mm. I have a 1050 and l love mrbulletfeeder drop die, so iam hooked up now.

Have no use for strong mount.

Heres the idea for strong mount, l am putting one on my 650.
