A limited number of die sets will be available soon.
These dies came as a big pile of dies and used to belong to a commercial reloading outfit...actually, two commercial reloading outfits. They are in a giant, well maybe just a truly huge pile of dies. Most have been disassembled. Some are a little rusty and some are a lot rusty. Some even appear to be new and unused dies. The dies which appear to be new and unused are mostly seating dies. Almost all of the sizing dies are steel vice carbide.
There are a limited number of calibers available. There are usually a lot of sets of each caliber. These calibers are calibers which were popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The newest date I have seen on a die is 1980 and many are dated in the 1960s. Many of the die sets are labeled with cartridge designations which were wildcats which became now familiar factory cartridges. A few are from improved cartridges and some are so rare that I have never heard of them! With the number of die sets of each caliber which are available, it makes me wonder if they wore out the sizing dies.
I do believe we have members which would be pleased to have free die sets which a commercial reloader thought of as junk.
It is going to take me a long time to sort these out, clean them up, reassemble the individual dies, and then to sort the dies into usable sets.
Not only that, but Mrs Brass saw one of my credit card bills and complained about how much I had spent on postage! So I can only mail out a limited number of sets each month.
When they are available, I will post a thread for the available dies.
Please don't ask me if I have this or that. I will bet you can't even guess how many of those requests I already get each day!
Since this is a long term project, I would like a little direction from the membership of this forum. I will seek that direction in the form of a poll.
For now, I am posting the poll.

With five votes cast so far, all are for rifle calibers, and the vote is four to one in favor of uncommon rifle calibers.

I wonder how this poll will shake out after 24 hours has passed.

The first die set to be cleaned up was so rare I had never heard of it. Some custom Mausers were chambered in it. Care to take any guesses which caliber? I might even post it up for grabs first!

For someone just getting into reloading and it being for a rifle or handgun alone I would suggest it be for a common caliber. I have in the past given both dies and other reloading equipment to beginner reloaders. Can`t say I have run across many odd calibers in dies or guns that want to be loaded for.Robert

Personally I'm into wildcat and oddball dies. I'm not in need of them, but I like to have forming dies and equipment for making the brass I do use.
If there are folks out there that are just getting into reloading and need the basics I'd be willing to help out by picking up the tab for shipping on a few sets if something came along that I could use.

Was that wildcat set you cleaned up a 6.5x257 Roberts?

Now this poll is shaking out about like I expected!
No truly firm direction on which way to go. Nearly half want pistol and nearly half want rifle!

Just for some hints on how this pile looks:
I suspect there are more dies in .222 than we have members with rifles or pistols in this caliber.
The same applies for .222 Mag and .22 Rem Jet and 7MM Wby Mag.
They are definitely fixed in time as there is not a single die for 10MM, .40S&W, or 7.62x39.

Ron, is it a 9.3 x 62?

BrassMagnet
03-02-2014, 10:43 AM
Sounds like you found a .488 whatchamacallit? ;)

I too think common calibers, and handgun at that ... as newbies starting out could benefit from that ... then work your way through the "pile"

Smaller than .488!

Hint! Hint! Hint!
It is a metric designated caliber which custom Mausers were chambered in. A Big Un! Think African safari Mauser!

Close, but still bigger!

Heck about the only 2 I can think of right off the bat would be 25 and 32 Rem sizer dies. Been looking on evilbay and the prices have this nasty habit of skyrocketing 20 minutes before the bidding closes. OH YEAH!!....some of the obscure pistol dies as well. I get asked from time to time about the 8mm Nambu and recently the 7.65 French long. Now that I have a lathe it makes some things easier but I do need to get a collet set-up for it, and more tooling.

They are RCBS 10.75x68 FL dies. When I post them, it will be in a thread just for them and it will be open to new and old members. Random chance will not rule!

Already listed by caliber.

I think I have enough direction to get a start!
I will start cleaning pistol dies which are already sorted by caliber and I will continue to sort rifle dies by caliber while I clean some pistol dies.
I think I will clean .38/357 dies first.

I believe .38 Spl is the .22LR of centerfire cartridges. Almost everyone has one and most reloaders start there!

Wouldn't happen to be a set of 22 velodog, 22 CCM or 22 Ballard extra long in with all those dies is there?

Here is some proof they exist:

98337

98338

Now I will start the separate thread to find them a new home. They have collected dust for far too long!
There was not bullet seating stem with them. I suspect they will use a 44 Mag seating stem due to the caliber. I will try to find one.

Grumpa I have both the 25 and the 32 rem size dies. I do not want to get rid of them, but I only bought them hopeing I would eventually run across a deal on the guns to use them with. I would gladly loan them to you until which time I happen to pick up something to use them with, which may actually be forever. lol

Well.......I actually need a set of my own. I have a 30Rem die and after some modification to the die I was hydroforming the 30-30 I have and want to come up with a different idea. Doing that by hand is tedious and needs a table all to itself. I'm playing Whack-A-Mole on the plunger I made and I'm hearing noises of things I never knew I had vibrating off the table with each hit. You can imagine my surprise I actually picked something off the floor I was looking for that I thought I lost.

The dies for the 25, 30, 32Rem I need to modify a tad and with my other idea and a lathe I'm sure I can make something work. The hydroforming actually puts out some rather impressive results, but....time isn't on my side with everything else I do. So I have to come up with a better mouse trap of sorts. I have a hunch with what I can make better and more affordable to folks it will gobble up what time I have. Just machining the new head on them right now, it takes me 1hr for 27pcs. Nothing to write home about I know but it's a start.

I think the most benefit would be common die sets of either rifle or pistol. I voted rifle because I flipped a coin.

That being said, I will be watching for a set of 8MMx56R HUNGARIAN MANN for the straight pull bolt gun I have. :-)
