I have two revolvers that are of 1897 & 1898 vintage, both of these being Colt 1895's. One is in .38 Long Colt and the other is in .41 Long Colt. I have fired these with both black powder (FFFg) and smokeless powder rounds. Accuracy using smokeless powder is fairly good. Accuracy using FFFg black powder is poor. Any ideas or tips? Fouling was not excessive. It seems that the variables when it comes to black powder would be less than with that of smokeless powder as the powder choices are minimal. I last loaded for .38 Long Colt, and I recall that approximately 20 grains of powder almost filled the case, and this still allowed for adequate compression when seating the bullet.
