As the long winter evolves into spring, I am making plans to weld up a smelting pot for use on a propane burner. I have a piece of 10" pipe and a piece of plate for the bottom and the necessary equipment and skills to assemble same, but am undecided as to the the style and size of the (bottom pour) spout. I see in the sticky thread on pots two versions of the valve assembly: one utilizing gravity to hold the stopper in place (as in a conventional bottom pour furnace) and one utilizing a thread to lock down the stopper. Would appreciate comments from builders and users as to pros and cons of both systems. I also wonder if it is advisable to elevated the outlet at the bottom of the pot so as to create a sump to catch/collect trash in the metal melt. Comments would be appreciated.

Insulation around the sides along with a lid will reduce heat-up times and save propane..
