700x and 41 Mag

I need a good plinking load for a 41 mag for 215 grain SWC
Looking for 800 to 900 fps

I have a lot of 700x

I thought I would start at 6 grains

Anyone got a good load

Your question piqued my interest and got me to thinking as I've never used 700x powder. I've always opted for Unique in my mid level 41 Magnum loads although 231 has produced some good loads as well.

A quick check of the burn rate chart shows that 700x is pretty fast burning and I didn't find any data for it at the IMR/Hodgdon powder web site.

A check over at the Smith & Wesson forum produced this thread that will be of interest to you regarding 700x. It would appear that your starting load should be OK with the 215 grain SWC considering this poster's experience. His comments are in post number four.

My very favorite 41 mag plinking load is 6.8 grs of Red Dot. If you have any of that, give it a try. Works super well in my mod 57. 210 grain boolit, by the way, Miha's very own. Mike

7.5 gr of 700x is a max load with a 210 swc. Found my best accuracy at 7 gr. Velocity is just under 1000. ymmv

Using 3.5 red dot and 195 SWCs for quasi-PPC course in my shooting partner's M57 and almost the same 3.5 Red Dot & 215 gr WC in my M29 for same match. BUT just paid Mihec for 4-cav Cramer HBWCs in four calibers so both guns plus our .38s will be running those jewels this season.

I've never used 700-X in the 41. My go to is 6.5gr 231 behind a 215gr SWC.

With a Lyman 410459 it gives me 890-910fps out of a 6" M57. A little slower out of my 4-5/8" BH.

6.5gr 231 behind Blammers 230 LFN gives 850-875fps out of a 6" M57, again, a lil slower out of my 4-5/8" BH.

You can also use TrailBoss and get velocities in the 750-800 range easily.

Plinking it's 5.5 - 6.5 trailboss. Like shooting a .22. Then unique at 8.5 grains moderate. Magnum is 18.5 gr 2400.
