I picked up a surprise the other day day a gun show, a new in the box Browning 1886 45-70. It is so pretty that I almost don't want to shoot it. I have been wanting a 45-70 for sometime. Figured I would by the ole Marlin. I could never decide between the guide or the long barrel stainless. Had always planned on getting one for use. i really don't have anything that i have bought just to collect dust.

One thing that I really like about the 1886 is that the magazine tube holds 9 unlike the short one on my Marlin 444S. It will definitely be the one I take when I get the chance to go moose hunting, being bear country and all, LOL.

Those Browning 1886's are beautiful rifles. I have a Browning 1886 saddle ring carbine that I would not want to part with.

Well, it was NIB when I bought it fresh from the factory back in 1992 or '93. I ordered one when they were originally announced in the Browning 1992 catalogue, then waited for many months until it was delivered and have been enormously happy with it ever since. That fall, I took a nice 300 pound (live weight) Whitetail buck with it. Here is a photo of my SRC ....

I purchased a gorgeous tang sight for it (since my 59 year-old eyes have a hard time focussing on that front sight) from Montana Vintage Arms. Here is a close up ...

I plan to take it Moose hunting this fall.

Love the tang sight. I was looking into the Lyman 66 that mounts on the left side of the receiver. Does the tang version stay out of the way when needed?

The tang sight folds down, but it is too long to fold flat against the grip. Set at 100 yards, as it is on mine in the photo, it folds down until the peep touches the tip of the comb. If you screw the post all the way down, it folds down a lot more, but not quite flat. To install a receiver sight you will need to have holes drilled. The tang sight remains rigid with only the rear screw but I plan to drill and tap a hole for the front screw as well.

I have a Browning Saddle Ring Carbine, and a Winchester Rifle. They both shoot the RCBS GC bullets well. My rifle will shoot MOA three shot groups with 300 gr HP Rem bullets and 50 grs of Rel 7.

On your RCBS GC cast bullets, are you running them thru a sizer die? What diameter are you using?

I run them through a .459 sizer die. My bullets come out .459 with a #2 alloy.

That is what I had planned on, just checking. :)

Nice photos KirkD. I find the 1886 to be the most elegant lever action ever produced.

It is my favorite also.
