Was cleaning up my Puma 454, and decided to give the inside of the action a good cleaning because I doubt that it had ever been done. Went to go remove the little holding screw for the lever cam/pivot...and as soon As I touched it the screw head broke in half.

So I guess now the question is...where can I find another one? Checked a few common gun parts stores online and no luck. The screw wasnt tight, I was able to thread it out my applying pressure with my thumb...

Oh no!

That sucks. How will you go foot hunting now?

I would check Brownells.

Do the live chat on Brownells, they may be able to help. They even found a part I needed from another source.

I was able to put the pin back in an make it work. Threaded it in with my thumb, same way I took it out, then gave it a small tap with a punch to get it a little tighter. It will work for now, but I still wanna get a new screw for it.

Didn't finish taking the gun apart after breaking the screw. Didn't wanna break it too bad all in one night.

What do you think caused it to break?

It looks to be a zink alloy screw head, and the groove was too deep for how thin the head was.

How about making a trip to the hardware store. Its not like Puma reinvented the wheel to make a small part like that.

BSJ- You're too strong for your own good. Must be all that work youve been doing as well as hoisting up those hogs in the back of the truck.

Junior,

That's a pretty common problem on some of the rossis. Look at the pin when fully seated, and if the "ledge" that the retaining screw sits on is proud of the recess for the retaining screw, then I would file down that little ledge till it is equal to, or lower than the recess. It wont hurt a thing if it is slightly lower, nor will it hurt to file it straight across instead of rounded. With it higher, it puts an awful strain on the screw head, which is thin and really hard/brittle.

You know, you don't always HAVE to remove that screw and pin to get the lever out. I have 4 R92s, and I never take that pin out. I just wiggle and pull the whole assembly out and put it back in without removing the pin and taking the risk of breaking that fragile screw. I think it's easier this way.

Dont waste your time going to the hardware store. They use really fine threads, the head is thin, and I doubt that you will find anything that will work.

I tried to find a link to this problem on the Rossi Rifleman forum, but had no luck. I know it's there as I have read about it before.

HEY I found what you need to read here. http://www.levergunscommunity.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36221

The main pin on mine is fairly low. The screw was fine till I tried taking it out, and the side that broke was not the side that holds the pin.

Well ****, I thought I might could help. Oh well.

Well ****, I thought I might be able to help.

I have read that those screws are very brittle. You might could soften the new screw (when you get it) by heating it with a torch till RED and letting it air cool. Might save you from this problem again. That screw carries no load at all, and could be mushy soft and still do it's job.
You could try getting a new screw from Rossi. You will need a serial number from a ROSSI and not a puma. I hear that you can get a serial# from gun brokers listings. That part # will be the same for ANY rossi caliber.

If you cant find a serial#, give me a PM and I will give you one of my numbers.

Why not just call Braztech International to recieve thier "World Famous: Worst Customer Service in the USA!"

Or call Legacy Sports International and have them get you one. LSI is out of Reno NV and have really good customer service. They are the current inporter for Pumas

I've heard about their customer service, this why I'm trying to avoid going that route. I do have access to a machine shop of sorts so I might just try making one...

Just weld the pin in place. Or rivet it with a nice nail.
Screws are for those with a defeatist outlook on life.
Me, I also remove the rearview mirror and the side mirrors on my cars. That's the past behind you, forget about it. The future is ahead of you.
Or, call mmgunsmithing.

Buckshot just started another thread about his experience in getting a screw from them. Check it out. He got the screw but had to consume his whole bottle of blood pressure meds to complete the task.
