View Full Version : What's your wife's favorite load.

I am not going to be nieve, I bet there are plenty of woman out there that do there own casting and loading. I just want to hear what you are loading for your wife/girl for target shooting or hunting. Special purpose loads are a plus.

Here is "Mama's load"
.38 special
Lee 105 swc
3.0 gr. Bullseye
Light roll crimp in front groove.

This is a very light and accurate target load that doesn't beat up her aluminum charter arms pink lady. She can hold 3" at 25 ft. all day long.

My wife isn't picky. She shoots what I hand her, she knows I won't play games and do something stupid to prove how manly I am.

What she does hate load wise is a load of bull.

Not sure, I can't get her out shooting. She just doesn't care to shoot so I don't push it on her. I wish she did for her own protection but it is what it is.

My girl is showing a renewed interest now that I got the 300 blk Handi rifle. She likes it and as soon as the weather breaks a bit we will be out shooting. I'll start her off on some light subsonic loads to get her going. I know she'll like it.

Oh, forgot my daughter. She will shoot anything. Full bore 44 mag, no problem. 300 gr full loads in 375 H&H, no problem. She has always trusted me and if I hand it to her she will shoot it.

In my mind nothing is more important than developing a level of trust. Once this trust is developed never, ever do anything to mess it up. Women don't like that.

45 ACP. 200gr SWC with 3.5 grains of trail boss. She calls them "bunny farts". Runs 650 f/s out of my Clackamas Kimber. When I got a new Range Officer last year, she declared the Kimber to be her 45. The next time she throws down 2 grand on a sewing machine, I tell her the old one in mine! Oh well, it's all hers someday.

I let her shoot my 500JRH BFR with 440 gr and 7 gr of TB going only 680 fps. Pulled the trigger and her arms went straight up in the air. She looked at me, smiled and handed the gun back. I got it on video.

Mine looked at me the other day after shooting a cylinder full of midrange .38s through her .357 Smith snubby and told me she preferred the full-house .357s, and would I keep loading those for her. She can't stand the slightest irritation with her clothes or shoes, but has always been pretty insensitive to recoil or muzzle blast. She doesn't flinch, either, even when shooting larger-caliber handguns. I'm just the opposite. Full-house loads for her.

4.5 gr power pistol under a 401-170tc , she went through my guns held them all and said that one felt the best so I made a lighter round for it , she shoots it quite well , but she has never felt a full 40S&W round , it is a full sized gun and with the light rounds it really is quite pleasant.

she doesn't want to come along very often , if she had the interest I would take her to the store and let her pick out her own , but then again she likes how this one fits her hand so she might just want the same thing.

Mine has a tendency to say its her favorite no matter the handgun or load at the time. She likes full standard power pistol ammo best.

She don't like 12 ga 3" mags though. She also gets annoyed when magnum rifle shooters setup all around us when A-she is shooting for accuracy & B- there are other benches available not right next to us. She will take a break and I will return the annoyance to the magnum rifle shooters by dumping mags of 308/223 continuously when they are trying to shoot. I always like to setup a bunch of shoot n c circles past their targets just to show them you don't need a magnum rifle for short range plinking. Why have a thunderous magnum rifle then only shoot it 1-200 yards, silliness.

My wife does not like recoil. With the .22lr situation I found her a nice S&W 4" model 10. Using M&P's HBWC's, about 141 grs, and a light load of bulllseye she looks forward to shooting.

My Sweetie has a pre 64 30-30 she got from her dad. I asked her why she never took it out and shot it. She is really recoil shy. Thanks to this site I learned about 10 grns of Unique and cast boolit loads. With some 31141's she says she really likes her 94. She also keeps a close eye on her coffee can of .38's 358156 over 5 grns Unique that feeds her model 10 Smith.

My lovely wife of 42 years only showed an interest in shooting a couple of years ago. She hates loud noises and heavy recoil - as well as semis that throw brass. I started her out with my vintage Ruger Super Bearcat and now it's hers. But, with the cost / availability of ammo - I'm looking at maybe getting a Cimarron "Lightning" - the 32-20 / 32 H & R combo. For the plinking we do, I think it would be a "fun gun" and something she might like to shoot with plinking loads. Until I find one, I'm going to order one of the Lee 358-105-SWC molds and pretty much go with the OP's combination of BE and the 105 gr. I have a nice 4 inch pre 15 Combat Masterpiece that I think she'd be able to shoot with just fine.

I tried for years to get my wife to shoot and she had no interest. I'm glad she's finally wanting to do it and it's enjoyable to read that a lot of other women are joining their better-half . . . a great way to spend time together!

I asked my wife this question and got a totally blank look quickly followed with the question "For what....", I repeated the question and again she asked "for what.....". She proceeded explain to me it's like picking out a pair of shoes to go with an outfit. You have dress shoes and for that she likes her 7x57mm Brno as she thinks that is quite elegant and is a super hunting rifle for her. For kicking around and shooting you know what out of clays and pop cans, she likes the SKS, kinda like tennis shoes she says...fun. She recently got a Ruger #3 45-70 and that's kind of like a boot rifle (and boy can she shoot that thing!). Her 10/22 is light and fun and just a riot so she thinks that's like flip-flops. She has other rifles but has rattled this off to me to give me the idea that not one rifle or load fits all. She did sum it up with you can never go wrong with a 1911 .45 strapped to your hip and has always loved a 1911 .45. (230 grn RNGG at 850fps, Blue Dot, Power Pistol or whatever is handy at the time) Oh, and the "little black rifle for the little black dress"...she says it's sad it's such a misunderstood firearm. I love my wife.

Very nice I need to try this technique.

Lucky for me mine will reload for her 308 and most recently she pressed out a few of my first boolits and then took them out to try them. As for a range the closest one we have is about 2 hours away so we either find a spot out of town to shoot or take a safari for anything that falls under open season. First date was rabbits had to ask her to marry me after her enthusiasm.

Well........having a "dirty mind", I had to think on this a moment!!!!!!! [smilie=1:

Since we are talking fire arms here, it would be a 250 or 300gn 45LC in my Circuit Judge with a Red Dot Scope. No kickback with my lighter loads and she can hit the bottles a 50 yards pretty regularly. Went thru about 50 of them the other day up north.

She hates the S&W 9mm, same as me.

My wife really enjoys shooting my M66 with either a 148gr wadcutter or 158gr SWC over 3grs of unique? That has become her handgun and I haven't tried taking it back. She also has taken interest in my Rossi R92 in 45Colt with either a 255gr SWC or 300gr over 10gr of unique. Her and her girlfriends(first time shooters) had a ball shooting the lever rifle. I had 200 rounds loaded up and they went through them in nothing flat. The girls ask me when I am going to take them out shooting again.
I would love to buy the wife a Rossi in .357 so it would go with the M66.

My wife likes to shoot me dirty looks if I go the the range without her. But when she does go she likes:

Lee 358-105 SWC over 5 grains of Unique in a J frame .38
Lee 358-158 RF over 5 grains of Unique in a K frame M13
Lee 356-125 2R over 5 grains in her Glock 23 with a 9mm conversion barrel
Lee 401-175 TC over 5 grains of Unique in her G23
Lee 429-208 WC over 7 grains of Unique in her Super BlackHawk.
Lee C429-240 SWC over 10 grains of Unique in her SBH
Lyman 225-415 55 gr over 14 grains of 4227 in her AR 5.56
Lee C312-155 2R over 14 grains of 4227 in her 300 AAC Backout
Lee 69 cal round ball over a 3 dram equivalent load through her 12 gauge 870 Express Magnum

And a huge favorite: 8 grain hot glue boolit (Lee 358-158 RF tumble lubed in alox) over a small pistol primer. This she loves to shoot at the neighbors house or in our garage - when the car is pulled out of course

When we were in college, I shot a 44SBH in sillywet matches ,250 gr boolit and lots of 2400. She shot it quite well one evening at the chert pit. Durn thing kicked like a mule and this little 100 lb girl shot it better than me! SBH went down the road, still got the "little girl". She doesn't really like to shoot very much ,but has her CCW and I know she can perform if needed! Occasionally shoots her M85 and my redhawk just to "keep her eye". Daughter has her M36 and likes 105RD on 4.5 of Unique for extended shooting and the 125 RF lee on same load for short periods of time. 148WC mid range in it for CCW.She shot SCTP with a 12ga , doesn't LIKE recoil, but can live with it if justified. we used the 7/8 oz international loads in the 12 ga gas gun.

I'm lucky, my wife likes to shoot and she likes pretty much everything. Last summer i loaded up a bunch of .45 Colt with black powder. We were out shooting one Sunday and I handed her the Blackhawk and said try this. She asked if they were "hot" loads and I told her they were no worse than what she was used to. She shot the cylinder full and turned around with a big grin on her face and said, "that's great! Got more of those?". Last week when I was loading up some .45 Colt again she came in and asked if I was loading with black because that was her favorite thing to shoot.

Muzzle blast is a consideration for Mrs. PB. She is mostly deaf in her left ear due to a viral infection years ago, but for some reason it is very sensitive to concussion. Even with proper ear plugs/ muffs, blast can cause a lot of discomfort.
Due to this, she tends to prefer long arms. Here favorite is the venerable Marlin 336 30-30 with 17 grains of 2400. She loves shooting my friends full auto SBR M-16 though. I though for sure that would be too much for her ear, but she was fine.
He also let her shoot his AK-74 the other day and she fell in love with that. So I was directed after that to begin searching for one.......
All in all, recoil isn't too big of a deal, just the blast is a consideration.

Well, AlaskanGurl casts and loads her own, and she has informed me that the 4th edition of the cast boolit handbook is "HER's"..... She want all her own loading stuff, which means that you gotta share space on the loading bench, and have duplicates of everything she loads.... So be careful what you wish for... Lol, or you might have to share loading bench space with nail polish...lol

She has her own load book, but I know that she shoots 5.5gr of unique in her 9mm over a lee tl boolit, and likes varget for her 22-250, and 2400 in her deer rifle, but she keeps her load book hidden so i am not sure about the loads.... I showed her how to setup her own powder measure with the 9mm stuff, so I know what that one is....

I guess I dont mind sharing space with this...

My wife shoots a few times a year at the indoor range, 38spec 148gr cast or her Ruger10-22.

My daughter shoots any time I invite her to the range. She lives in the next town over. Her favorite is the 1911A1 with 230gr Lee TC with 5gr of 700X and CCI300. That's mostly what I load for it.

She also likes her 30-30 Handi-rifle with 150gr Lee cast. My brother gave us his old Weaver K4 with post to put on her rifle.

My friend's wife casts 30cal 190gr for her 300win (grand dad's old model 70) and hits the 500 yd gong pretty regular. She also makes lots of Corbin 224 dia slugs with cast pure pb cores.

She competes with the AR and couldn't find slugs for her Dillon 650. She even lets me use the Dillon for 45acp, 223Rem and 30-30 if I bring the components. She's middle aged and really enjoys jack rabbit hunting with our group in central Oregon sage brush.

Hey AlaskanGuy, good to see the tricky Canadians didn't sneak over the border and grab you. Watch "Canadian Bacon" for the true story...;)

But... it is good to have one's own reloading stuff because you set it up and it's good from then on.

Nail polish might be good for primer sealant, don't knock it. You might run out of it and need some. Nail polish thinner might be useful as a solvent. Bobby pins have come in useful in the past. Open your mind to alternate uses for common items.

Just a subtle hint, there are other cast boolit books she might be interested in. RCBS. Ideal.

I went Unique this year loading for cast boolits. Until this year I have NEVER loaded anything with it. In the past, I've loaded shotgun with 473, 452AA, 700x, 800x, SR7625, SR4759, and PB (to name a few). But Unique does a good job in the cases I cast for.

Her favorites are her 1903 (.32ACP) and her 1911 Colt Light Commander (.45ACP). She will also shoot my Python but prefers it with reduce loads (or .38 spl).

Mine does NOT like recoil, but she loves .22lr in all flavors and kinds of guns. With my old Heritage single action she is a terror at 25 yards.
She is quickly becoming even more so with the Ruger 22/45.

I am hoping to get her shooting .357 out of a handi Rifle.

First time she tried my buddy's 9mm Beretta she blew a 2 liter full of water sky high, hit it dead center at 25 yards, offhand.

She is good, as long as she doesn't care too much.

My Wife likes the three inch barreled model 60 Ladysmith I bought her for Christmas in 1974 best (I think) BUT my trouble is her claiming more and more of my arsenal for herself, and NO loaded down ammo in anything she shoots!

My wife likes 4.3 grains of WST under a 175 grain full wadcutter (Accurate Molds #45-170W) for her 45 ACP revolver.

Her most shot gun, a 1978 1894 Marlin in .357 mag uses 17.1grs W296 and 160gr Lyman cast. I found that load about 35 years ago and she's shot nothing else. Does a great job on deer on down.

My wife has one of those imported Taurus M85's with a 4 inch barrel and a Rossi 357 20" round blued barrel that gets fed a steady diet of lee 125-358 RF over 3grn of 800x she shot over 2000 rounds one evening

38 Special Cowboy Action Shooting load: 3 grains Titegroup under a 158 grain RNFP (Lee). Mad accuracy in everything from the Rossi 92 rifle to the LCR, mild recoil, no leading, and inexpensive.
9mm: Anything she can put in the mag...woman LOVES her new XDm! I'm going to try a load with Clays and the 125 grain Lee 2R...I'm confident it will be a winner (I'll post it on the 9mm thread).
45 Colt Cowboy load: 6 grains Titegroup under a 255 grain RNFP (Lee). Stout recoil and ferocious muzzle blast, but the accuracy must be seen to be believed.
45 ACP: 3.9 grains Clays with a 230 grain LRN (Lee 228 1R). Mild recoil, cleanest load I've ever shot, and if she misses, she knows it's not the ammo!
44 Magnum: 20 grains of Winchester 296 and a 310 grain hard cast (Lee, again). Shoots little groups and isn't too terrible from a Super Redhawk.
270 Winchester: 57.8 grains of H4831SC under a 140 grain Nosler BT seated out to slightly below magazine length. Her Remington 700 plops them into inch groups at 200 yards.

Some tips that worked with my wife. First I took her out and let her shoot the .17hmr at 100 yards. Set up a dozen eggs and let her bust them. The instant feedback really makes her enjoy shooting. Shooting paper does nothing for her. As for a handgun, she wasn't that interested until I bought her a gun. When I came home from that gunshow and she asked me what I bought and I handed her the gun and said it is yours. She smiled and then wanted to go shoot. Can't get it away from her now. You have to buy her something of her own and make it fun to shoot. Bought her a nice pink case to keep it in and that made her face light up also.

I think I loaded 115grain 9mm in hers. Whatever 115grain bullets are on sale at the time and load them about middle of the road with power pistol. Can't remember the exact load though. Her gun is a S&W 6906, fits her hand well and is alloy so not hard to wield.

85grains of fg and 520 grains of .451!
She must be getting used to the recoil now as she no longer flinches and can manage 10 shots before complaining of a sore shoulder!
The .451 Enfield is her first choice whenever we go shooting together but now she is eyeing up the Martini Henry with a glint in her eye!

My wife likes her 22 Hornet rifle with 45 grain soft points over a case full of H110 and her Browning Hi Power with any factory load (I don't reload 9mm). She shoots the Ruger MK-III 6" SS tapered barrel the most though.

That ticks me off also. Why do people have to set up right next to you if there are other benches available? I like the way you handle it. My wife doesn't shoot much, she likes a 22lr and a couple of pop cans when she does. :)
