it finely got warm enough to go shoot the old 94 to day and I am having the same trouble seeing sight as I did with hand guns (I put red dot on them) but did shoot some 9inch groups at 100yards with my first batch of cast 150gr GC.
so can I get a red dot that will work on the old pre 64 94? or should I try to find a good peep sight if so what kind due you recommend?

If your 94 is factory drilled and tapped on the left receiver sidewall, the Lyman works well. On my pre-war which was not drilled and tapped, I had the bolt drilled and tapped and used an XS peep having a radius ground on its base to match the bolt contour, and used the XS Cowboy Express big bead front sight.

Look at the Lyman # 2 tang sight. Requires the top tang to be drilled and tapped if not already. The Lyman 66 is the correct peep sight for mounting on the reciever.

You have a several good options. As explained above, your receiver may be D&T'd for a receiver sight. I like the Williams and the Lyman. Your tang may be D&T'd for a tang sight. You can replace the rear sight with a Bullseye sight from Marble. Full buckhorn sights may work, as will an aperture on the rear sight on the pattern of a product from One Ragged Hole. You could also have the tang or receiver D&T'd for the sight you prefer.

I put a Turnbull mount on my lever gun and a Burris FastFire3 red dot. It worked out better for me than the receiver sight due to some "old eye" problems I have. I can get sub 2" five shot groups with it.

Glad this was asked, hope I'm not hijacking. I would like a ladder style aperture on my 94 in 38-55, but don't know how tall I can go and still have it fold down. Anyone seen an adjustable aperture for a '94? I have the no 2 tang sight, it's not easily adjusted.

I had a Williams 5D (cheap version of FP) on my 94 and it was perfect. I use them on my Marlin 336 and 1894 also.

You can spend a lot of money on sights and receiver sights work well, but I have also had good luck by using a needle file and opening up the rear sight U notch a bit. I have a 22 mag I did that with as I wanted a quick way to adjust between bullet weights. Most rear sights are universal and do no not always work well for the barrel length. You should be able to see light around the bead. Another good rear sight is the Express sight which has no V or U but is a very wide V.

I got an old Winchester 64 carbine built in the 1940s. After removing the semi buckhorn rear sight, installing a Williams Foolproof and making a brass plug for the dovetail slot I could suddenly hit stuff.

When I was a boy most of the lever guns were called "deer rifles". They came out of the gun cabinets for "deer season." Sighting in was usually one shot at about 50 or 75 yards to establish that it was still "on." Most of these rifles had Williams 5Ds - set once for 150 grain Silvertips and forgotten. Sound familiar?

I put the Marbles on my Winchester 94. I went with the Marbles rather than Lyman because the Lyman isn't windage adjustable and the Marbles is. Had to drill & tap for either sight.

Couple of shots to make sure it was still "minute of deer" and into the swamps with it. Most shots 25yrds or so

I got the Williams mounted and tried it out to day I had loads ranging from 20gr to 26gr of R7 and the lee 150gr GC I cast best group was 4.8 inch at 100 yards with 24gr of R7, the old eyes were still having a hard time seeing front bead, Question due you use the hood on the front sight when using peep?

...... Question due you use the hood on the front sight when using peep?

No, it confuses my poor old eyeballs.

Make sure your target is big enough and contrasts with your front sight. I use bright red squares cut from colored printer paper. Black targets don't work well with a black front sight. Most remove the hood. The target folk use an aperture on the front also, the Lyman 17 front allows for very good group shooting, but has limited use for other purposes. I have Williams Foolproofs on several Marlins, they work very well. The Marlins usually need a taller front sight, I don't know about the Winchesters. Enjoy.

I think I will try it without hood on front sight and see it I can find some red or orange target and may be a smaller rear aperture mine has a .093 diameter might see if I can make a .062 diameter one I wonder what thread it is.

I just put a Williams peep on my winny 94 30-30
I'll go shoot it in the morning.
Looks much better than the original buckhorn style sight.

I've found it best to remove the front sight hood with peep sights.

How about a no tap,no drill scout mount for a Winchester? http://www.mod94scoperail.com/index.html

You can mount Red Dots/Lasers/Lights or a Scout Scope.

The front bead sight on the Win.94 covers a standard rifle target at 100 yards. I am still using my front bead but put it on the 6 oclock position at 100 yards and my groups size was cut in half. I had to raise my standard rear sight to the second highest position because I am using a cast 170 grain bullet going out at 1500 FPS. good luck

Yup. Sounds like what went on down at the sand pit in my home town, except most rifles had the factory sights. Back then a box of 30-30 ammo (they called them "shells") lasted 10 years or more for most of those guys.
