My 1917 Enfield was fitted with a Shilen .35 cal barrel (16 twist darn it) and chambered in 35 Whelen AI. Years later I decided a muzzle brake was in order if I was going to shoot it much from the bench. I fitted the Vais brake and again much later decided it needed to be gone it I were to hunt with this rifle. I've got a cap that firs the 9/16-24 threads but the hole through it is below bore.

Now the question: Is there any reason to not just drill the cap to 3/8? I could get a chucking reamer of whatever size but is that realy necessary in this case?

I'm having trouble envisioning this -"muzzle thread cap" - all of my thread protectors are just rings that go on the barrel
and are flush or just a little proud of the end, this is an actual cap that covers the end with a hole thru it?
If so then it's acting as the muzzle itself and would need to be centered should be crowned. Depending upon
the relationship with the barrel's true crown you might need to be careful of gas effect on accuracy.

Something like this - good

this is - BAD

So when done right the muzzle will have, in effect, a recessed crown if done like the top photo. I'll measure the length of the barrel threads and cut the cap at that length to keep it "flush or just a little proud of the end." This will remove the hole in the end of it. Probably a good idea to match the barrels OD first. Is there a hole for a spanner I'm not seeing? How do you remove and tighten it?

Cap is crowned to 11 degrees same as the barrel.

most of mine are knurled - but the suppressors are not and one of the cheap strap wrenches work if I can't get it with hand force alone.
