Can Hodgdon International Clays powder be used as a pistol powder? I reload 44 Mag, 45 ACP, 45 AR, 380 Auto.

Uuuuussuaally shotgun powders can be used as pistol powders. However, I did not find a load doing a BRief search at the Hodgdon website.

I suggest you do an exhaustive search before attempting such project.

Don't confuse Clays with International Clays. If I remember right there is no recommended data for International Clays in pistol cartridges because of pressure excursions.

IF NOT IN A SHOTGUN,

International Clay's CAN BE BAD JUJU.

Unless you have an old can, "International Clays" does not exist any more. The current name is
"International", with a very small note below somewhere that says "with Clays technology".

This is because Hodgdon had folks not reading well and not distinguishing between Clays, Universal
Clays and International Clays. So now there are - Universal, International and Clays.

That said, Hodgdon does not list any handgun loads for .38 Spl, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .45 Colt, .45 ACP
with International, so while not an exhaustive check, I'd suggest that they think it is not suitable for
handgun loading. I suspect that they know more about it than anyone else.

It is my favorite powder for low recoil 1 oz 12 gauge loads. Sadly no pistol data. Call hodgdon.

Take care

Hodgdon has CAS data for the 38 spcl, 44 mag, and 45 colt using international and in each case it's used with the heavier bullets in all three calibers. The only pistol caliber that I use it in is the 45 colt with 250 grn boolits. I have used it in 38 spcl, but don't recall the results.

^^ This is great news!

I told a guy at Hodgdon's that there is GREAT Confusion out there with 3 different "Clays" powders.

His response was " well there is Red Dot, Blue Dot, and Green Dot! Handloaders seem to have no confusion there! "

I responded that people react, respond, learn and remember Colors in a total different way than just words; i.e.,those words are visual.

He could not grasp my explanation, or rather, would not concede.

international clays is the Australian powder AS50N. Made for hodgdon right here in Aussie.
AS50 is a favourite powder for 9mm, 38 special.
google ADI load data.
I have been using it for years

Love it for trap shooting in my 12 ga. Also saw where it will work in the 45 colt 255 grain. Never knew about the AS50N equivalent.

I had awful results with it in pistols. It does make for a smokin' good shotgun powder, though.

I traded it off for a can of Titegroup and I know that is a pistol powder.

The renaming isn't particularly new, maybe 5 or 10 years ago, I forget.

I have relatively new bottles of 'Universal' and 'Clays' on the shelf. The 'Clays' has load data for pistols on the bottle. Now there is a 'International' that on the web site is part of the 'Clays' line, but shows no pistol data. No its not confusing at all vs obviously different RED, GREEN, BLUE like in the dot line. I have to make sure I grab the right one 'UNIVERSAL..w clays technology' vs the 'CLAYS'.

Looking at ADI's web site for data for pistol use for AS50N, which is said to be the same as Hodgdon's
International powder. I could find no pistol data there for this powder.

I checked .38 Spl, .45 ACP, .44 Spl, so not exhaustive but when you choose the powder in their information
section, it shows an example shotgun load, where AP50N shows a .38 Spl load.

Are we getting AP50 and AS50 confused? Have they scrubbed this powder from their
pistol list for bad behavior? I have a small quantity, given to me, wouldn't mind using it
but need some reasonable data.

My Hodgdon reloading manual from 2010 list International powder in the Cowboy Action Data section for .38 Special, .44 Special, .44 Mag & .45 Long Colt. I have used it in .44 Special and it burns very clean.
