A friend at the gun club I belong to has a little under 4 lbs. of 2400. He shoots a lot of 45 acp and is about to run out of his regular powder. He ask me, the other day, if I knew of a load for (I believe he said) a 200 grn lead bullet using the 2400. I was wondering if anyone had tried using 2400 in a 45 acp.

#2400 is not suitable for use in an M1911 pistol because unburned powder will jam the action.

I tried a "nominal caseful," compressed (~13 grs.) with 265-grain Webley Mk2 bullets in my Ruger Blackhawk with .45 ACP cylinder and didn't break 800 fps with twice or more the amount of #2400 it took to get the same velocity I would get more cleanly and uniformly using 231, Bullseye or Unique with the same bullet.

The only place I have found that #2400 had marginal utility in the .45 ACP was when turning the base plugs over in the MiHEC Webley mold to cast a 295-grain solid base bullet and loading these as "carbine" loads for a RIFLE which then enabled me to get 1050 fps in the rifle, and it burned well enough to get about 800 fps in the Ruger New Model Blackhawk with .45 ACP cylinder.

I had similarly tried Alliant's recommended loads using #2400 in the .45 Colt with 255-grain lead bullets and found that ignition was erratic and unburned powder jammed up the revolver action. I had to increase charges more than 2 grains above Alliant's recommended 15.4 grain maximum in .45 Colt to equal about the same velocity I got with 7.2 grains of Bullseye.

He should be able to trade it off for suitable powder.

Or alternatively maybe he will buy a 44 mag to burn it up in.

I offered to buy it but he wanted to see if he could work up a load.

After he realizes it wont work, perhaps you will get a better deal on it.

he could probably get 5-6 cans of tightwad in trade for just less than 4 of 2400

it seems to be one of the only powders on the shelf , hodgden has released some data for it in 45acp they won't be very fast 6-800fps but it should make decent practice and target loads

at 2000 loads to the 14oz can that would be 10-12 k rounds of powder as a trade from 4 pounds of powder he has hanging around
