I have a small project in the planning, the recreation of a special norwegian type of muzzle-loader. The "problem"W is the shape of the barrel, the first 1/3 of the barrel is square, each side measuring approx 1-7/16" and the rest is round. A normal blank doesnt have enough material to make such a barrel, so can anyone point me in the direction of a barrelmaker who can make me such a barrel?
It can be made out of plain steel, it doesent take somone making barrels form his own ore dugg out under the full moon:-)

Try Long Hammock. They should be able to help. No big deal finding someone to make a barrel like this. It is a few less steps for them, than making it into an octagon to round barrel.

Robert Hoyt of Pennsylvania has a great reputation for making custom muzzleloader barrels. BvT

Could it be made by sleeving a round barrel into a piece of square stock?

That might be a less expensive way to get what you want.

Sleeving is offcourse possible but not quite what I am looking for. This guns are true beauties. Their true orgin is uknown, but most known guns have been dated to late 1600, early 1700. They are square for the first 1/3 and then tapered round to the muzzle end. Most of them is rifled and calibers are .40 to .60.
At the point were the shape changes most of them have fine oakleaves filed out of the barrel. Some engraving is done along the edges of the square part. Rearsigths is shaped like a H. Many of this guns have seen use for close to 300years and is still in shootable condition.

I can possibly buy an orignal barrel and shoot it, but it will cost $$$ and I am really not comfortable with shooting and possibly ruining such a piece.

Thanks for all directions to custom barrel makers; contactinfo would be really helpfull! Internettsearch does not give any info on direct contact with this companies!

You can reach Bob Hoyt at the Freischutz Shop, 700 Fairfield Station Rd., Fairfield, Pa. 17320. His phone # 717-642-6696.
This is the last info I had on him and I think it is still good. Does excellent work.
He does not have a website as far as I know.

You can also try Whitacre's Machine Shop at 519 Turtle Meadow Dr., Winchester, Va.,22602. Phone 540-877-1468. Also does excellent work. He has a website of cwbarrels@yahoo.com.
Good luck with your project.:-D

Octagon to round barrels are not a novelty and most any Black Powder supply house should sell them. Here's a page from Track of the Wolf's catalog: http://www.trackofthewolf.com/(S(s1hhjzqbcgyqif55kgevua55))/categories/partList.aspx?catID=14&subID=142&styleID=492

There are many BP supply houses, this should not be a problem unless you need a very specific length that you can't find. John Getz in Pennsylvania also makes custom barrels, but could be a bit before you receive it from when you order. John's a great guy and makes top quality barrels.

The gun on the pictures is kind of extra special-having part square/part octagon barrel.

Wow.. that's something. It's a reverse: round to octagon..... I don't recall having seen that before!

Blysmelter, if you google "snaphaunce rifle" and scrutinize the first several pages of references, there is a fellow from either Norway or Sweden who is producing the barrels you seek. He lives out in the country, makes all the parts. Snaphaunces turned into flintlocks eventually, eh? BvT
