I'm experimenting with putting a peep sight on the safety and need one to experiment with. It's my daughter's rifle and I need to keep the original in case things don't work out. I know a lot of guys throw them away and I'm hoping someone will throw one my way.
Thanks.

You already have a safety................ AND, there's no need to re-invent the wheel.... ;)

I made a Rossi M92 bolt peep, w/o doing anything to the original bolt-top safety, except to open the bolt, tap out the retaining pin (in the locking lug recess') and lift the safety up/out - taking care not to lose the detent ball & spring.

I chucked some round stock in a hand-held electric 3/8" drill and turned it down to the correct diameter via holding file(s) against the spinning stock. I copied the shape/grooves of the original safety body, except that I made the round section shorter @ the bottom to eliminate the FP interference on the original safety body.

I started with round stock fat enough to leave a lip, larger in diameter than the safety body, so the top of the replacement would overlap the top of the bolt's safety hole.

I D/T the finished turning centrally 6-48 & installed a special-order (no extra charge) Skinner Lo-Pro ( www.skinnersights.com )with a 6-48 stem. My turned replacement is held in the bolt with the same pin I removed from the bolt that held the safety in.

It readily zeroed, using the issue front sight - although I thinned the LoPro locking ring, mostly to set the sight as low as possible..

It should end up looking something like this:

OR, a drop-in unit, pretty much the same thing, but w/o the work, and retaining the safety feature (via turning the peep 90-degrees), is available @ $60 from steve's gunz. http://store.stevesgunz.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=20_26&products_id=5

I don't have a safety, my daughter has a safety on her rifle and I don't want to experiment with her stuff....and I like to re-invent the wheel like you did. Anyone can buy stuff.

So I take it you don't want to get rid of your old safety.

Not being a machinist - I'm not certain this is possible...but could you have a peep sight and a safety in one piece. Could you rig it so you turn the peep sight to engage the safety - can't see through the sight: the safety is "on".

Or would this be a square wheel.

Just curious?

I believe that is the way the ones from steves guns are set up. For what he gets for them, im temped to buy a small lathe and make a few to sell here as a lower price.

This is the concept I'm working on. My intention is to screw a simple L to the original safety. A generous poster on the Rossi forum gave me a safety to experiment with, but I made a mistake and had to silver solder the blade in place. This weekend I tried to drill the safety on my daughter's rifle and found that it was extremely hard. The drill bit wouldn't touch it. My plan now is to turn a new safety plug and drill/tap two holes in the top. Three holes in a L shaped piece of metal would be all it would take to make the peep and it would be easy to make several blades to dial in where the gun shoots.

Rough prototype:
