i have bashed Hodgdon about the loss. Will all of you also bash them? Flood Hodgdon with E mails or calls.

Back when I was first starting to shoot Winchester high walls in hyphenated calibers (especially 32-40) I was made aware of the usefulness of 4759. I discovered that 13.6 of 4759 behind 175-195 grain bullets shot great for events like the "Ram Bash" (ringing the steel ram @ 200 yards from offhand - iron sights only) and the same bullets breech seated for offhand schuetzen events. I managed to accumulate about 10 or so pounds in my stash before I slowed down on shooting these disciplines, so at my current rate of consumption I will probably have enough to last several more years. I'm sorry to see it go, but I guess the big H figured there just wasn't enough demand to justify the cost of making it. I do seem to recall that they announced it was being discontinued (or maybe it even was discontinued) back in the '80s, but at that time, public outcry caused them to reverse their decision and bring it back. Maybe it will happen again if you politely contact them showing interest. Who knows? :coffeecom

I was under the impression many of their powders came from other mfg's. Maybe big H can't get it anymore.

Oh yes they can get it. Hodgdon gets powders made all over the world. It is just the bottom line where another powder sells more. The big problem is loads for 4759 are hard to find so less is sold. We know better but are a small voice. If they just promote it and test it for all cartridges, sales would go out of sight. It is ignored too much. They do not even know how Varget spans so many things.
Go though all your manuals and see how few 4759 loads there are. THEIR fault to let us lose one of the best powders ever.

sr-4759 has been the reduced load rifle powder since forever.
my speer #9 has data in it for just about everything you could imagine.
I guess with all the new stuff they have coming out [that is exactly the same as the rest of their line] some of these great old powders are just over looked.

What I don't get: if Hodgdon is losing money on slow sellers like 4759 why are they keeping so many twins like 231/HP-38 and 296/H110, and the myriad Hodgdon/IMR fraternal twins in production? Hodgdon and all the others not only need to start supporting old favorites again but need to move the rest of their data into the 21st century. For example, why keep publishing decades old ballistics that are irrelevant to modern tastes? How about test .38 Special in a 2 or 4 inch barrel, not 8"? Or test .32 Auto in a 2-1/2" tube, not 4"?

it is "old technology"
We are shooting this stuff out of weapons built on 1800's technology. I like old technology. There was a poll in another thread asking, if you could only have one powder, what would it be. The winner was.......Unique. Now thats old technology.

The reason 4759 is so good is that it has a burn rate that is pretty fast but it is bulky and fills a case more. It used to be sold in one pound jugs that only contained 1/2#. It has always been expensive so I will sure pay more if needed.
I have not found any other powder to match it, they can stick TB where the sun don't shine.
I will not spend money searching for a replacement because there is none.

They called back today and said that 4759 comes from General Dynamics in Canada, they are going to increase the price by 25% and that it is "old technology".
I think he was trying to get me to change over to Trail Boss because he kept mentioning TB. I told him I couldn't get near the accuracy out of TB that I get from SR 4759.
Keep trying. Maybe it will just cost more since obama and federal reserve devalued our dollar with quantitative easing.

Wonder if they're going to do the same with PB???

I bought 4 lbs last Thursday in Lewiston, ID. Kid behind the counter about swallowed his snoose when I asked for it. He said he had "some". I asked if they had a limit, he said 2 lbs. so I said I'll take 2. He asked what I used it for and I told him mostly 32-20 and 303 Brit loads. He said he had never sold a pound of that to anyone and asked if I wanted more. According to him I got all they had (he brought out the 4 lbs.) and removed the higher price tags so I got it at 18.99 lb. Thanks Bill Weddle for the phone #. I will call and give them my opinion on keeping sr4759 in production. I will ask that they keep sr4756 as well. JW

4756, 4759 and 7625.

I use all three and will miss them dearly.

Jerry

BTW......Hodgdon does not manufacture any powder. They buy it from various manufacturers and resell it. Some from General Dynamics in Canada, some from ADI in Australia and some from St. Marks in Florida, USA. There may be others as well.

I had no idea, I use 4756 and 4759 for my cast bullet rifle loads and have not been able to get 4756 for about a year now. I'll call but I don't think it will do any good, yuppie bean counters really don't care.

MAybe we can put in a big group by for the last shipment Hodgdon is doing from Canada. I think I could do 16 pounds.

I drove to Superior Wisc. today and I was able to buy a 5lb can of 4759 for 95 bucks, with what I already have on hand I should be set for a very long time.

I sent an email to Hodgdon about 4759 a couple of months ago. I posted it in another thread, Casting for Shotgun Forum, IIRC, and basically Hodgdon said the last shipments of 4579 would be in Jan 2014.

Just left LGS 3 pounds is all they had bought all three ,they don't know if there will be another shipment. call Hodgdon left message. Living in NY and dealing with all that's going on here politically just makes me nuts now to see a great powder like this go is sad.Seams like all small companies are being bought out by big corp. who care more about profit than eneything else!

Old technology, costs more? Having trouble getting that to compute. I don't use 4759 but it sounds like something I should try but I guess I won't. May call just to rattle their cage anway. ;-)

I read that 4756 and pb are on this go away list also . ive got 4 lb of 4756 here I haven't used in anything yet just grabbed it up cause I found it but pb, c- mon what are they thinking ? i'll miss the hell out of pb if it goes away I use it in 1 oz 12 gauge loads for clay pigeon shooting and ive got an awesome 9mm revolver only load that I use pb for and shoot out of my Blackhawk convertible very accurate. ive managed to scrounge up 5 -1 lb containers of it plus the 1 im working out of now is over half full but no one would have to twist my arm to buy an 8 pounder if I ran across 1 .

Today was the first 4759 I have seen in just short of forever here. That is not to say it hasn't been here, but powder is still going away the day it comes in. They have a 2 pound limit, buuuut my wife bought 2 pounds too. lol I will go back at opening time in the morning, but will bet money it is a wasted trip. lol
