Al at NOE never seems to amaze me, his latest, just need to find a lube sizer (die),to accomadate this bullet, maybe Lathesmith, he can do just about anything you ask, next is to find a really nice gun to shoot these beauties, think we'll call it a 'super slider'. 9668996690

So the ? is--how was this done, anyone care to take a wild guess, we'll see what responses we get, i'll let you all know at a later date, Ha, have fun.

I'm guessing you shot both bullets at a playing card that was a little tougher than you expected it to be? Or were you trying to split them on an axe blade so you could pop two balloons simultaneously? [smilie=1:

It could be as simple as foil tape across the mold face, it could be a mis-match with a blank mold waiting to be cut.

My money is on the tinfoil. Old trick. Some folks just put foil across the tips of the boolits to aid in expansion or some such noise.

Nah, just a guy from Iowa who doesn't understand that you can't make 22 ammo by using half a 44.

Dang Iowans. Now you others understand why God put the Missouri River where he did, he wanted to protect Nebraska.:grin:

I'm going to guess it was poured into a mold half turned 90 degrees and the sprue plate pour hole moved. Cast as a half using 1 half of the mold.

The surface finish makes me think that those cooled in the open air.

Looks like oil contaminated shim stock used as a mold spacer.

Im betting he just took a mold half and put it on the bench, taped the base side with foil and poured from the top. The shrinkage marks on those suggests that they were what was open to the air...

Here in Michigan we would call them "fishing sinkers".Robert

This looks like the way is was done. I just may have to try that for a shadow box display!

the bubbles ( what some term as open air cooling ) were caused by some finish on the spacer , much akin to a new teflon muffin pan ingot mold ( eg; the finish burning off )

All Iowa jokes aside, and being a Minnesotan, you know I got a pocket full of 'em.

Those are called Halfzies !

This has really been fun, hope Al & Chris were not too upset with me. The other day while casting this idea just jumped out at me and I had too try. I took a soda can and cut a spacer to fit in the mold, closed very tight, could have heated up the mold more to get rid of the 'bubbles' but was in too much of a rush to see how it would turn out, took a few samples to our gun club monthly meeting and got a few laughs, most said only 'me' would come up with something goofy like this, yep we 'flat landers' in Ia do have fun. They would make a nice shadow box show and tell but man would take me a week of sundays to do all the molds I have. Thanks to all who replied. Woof woof Gus an me.

I wonder what they'd do if you put 2 together and loaded them as 1 and then shot em.

I think Byron Ferguson shot them with his bow, probably see it next week on Impossible shoots. I just cant figure out if he shot them setting or if someone shot them out of a gun and he shot them in mid-air?

Now, glue them together, lube & size them, and shoot them into milk jugs. Take lots of pics and let us know how it worked.

Hey, I just might try that--when I get time--that's what I need most of.

Not really. I've toyed with the idea for a long time. The only thing better than doing it myself is getting somebody else to do it and save me time and resources. besides, I hate getting wet.

Ballistic gel would be better yet...

If you use a glue that holds together in flight but not on impact it would make an interesting wound channel. I would expect the halves to slice away from each other on impact.

I might could see that happening, if you took a regular boolit and sawed it down the middle, to a depth of about 2/3 of the way back from the nose (or used the Al spacer in that capacity, so that the base was still connected), filled that gap with foam or something soft, and shot it in a sabot in a larger caliber.

(Why am I even thinking about this? I got lead melting outside!):veryconfu

Or use a plain base gas check to hold them together until they leave the bore...

Doe Run? What is that?

Doe Run was the source for all lead in the U.S. It was shut down as part of a government conspiracy to deprive us of lead. Additionally the DHS bought all remaining ammo in production (to include 22lr) to further deplete shooters of stock. Then the cerebus group bought everything shooting and firearm related and will be closing all of those down.

Whew!!! That's a doosy!

It would probably be simpler to just put a piece of tinfoil or even a cigarette paper between the mold halves in the nose section only.
