Wild Bill,
.
Do you mean that you have a Krag in 30/40 Govt with a .308" diameter barrel, or do you have a Krag rifle chambered in 308 Win? Please advise.

I realize you're asking about shooting light loads in your rifle. But .....If it is a 308 Win. on a Krag action........52,000 psi in a Krag. UUUmmm, not me. If the rifle is chambered for a 308 Win. someone could put in a factory round some day in the rifle when you're dead and gone with disastrous consequences.

I once read of a particular situation where the 22 Hornet sheared off the single lug of a Krag.

If you've REALLY got a Krag that's been rebarreled to .308 WCF, I'm definitely with Ben. Any Krag action - U.S. Springfield, Danish, or Norwegian - is over 100 years old and was only rated for 40,000 psi when it was brand new. You might get away with shooting CB-level loads but why take the chance?

Bill

Incidently, I love my Krags and probably put 500-600 rounds a year through them but neither has seen even a jacketed factory loads since I acquired them.

Got to keep a careful eye on that locking lug on the Krag bolt. Inspect it carefully every time you clean it.

I'm with Ben and Bill. Stay well under the original stated pressures for the Krag action. Smoothest bolt action in the world.

I continue to be amazed at how silky smooth a Krag action is when cycling.

Other than the availability of empty brass, I really can't see any logical reason to take one of these old war relics and chamber it to a 52,000 psi cartridge like the modern 308 Win.

I'm still interested in hearing more from wild bill wildbill59 ? ? ?

Not trying to hijack the thread, but, how would a Norwegian Krag be stronger than a US Krag? And it really doesn't matter if it is chambered in .308 Winchester, or the original 30-40 cartridge. My old Speer manual strongly urged that care be taken when reloading with J-words, as it was easy to push the action past it's design limits with the 30-40. IIRC, the Lyman Cast Boolit Handbook #3 has pressures for the various loads listed, so, as long as the loader/shooter follows the suggested loads, it should be alright. The only other difference is if this gun should get into unknowing hands and were fired with standard .308 loads, tragedy could occur. Study the manuals carefully. If need be, get some old ideal manuals, and they will guide you. Good luck, and safe shooting.

The Norwegian Krags were made of a stronger steel than that of the US Krags, especially the later made actions. They were in production until WWII and I imagine the steels of the 1920s and 30s were a far cry from the late 1800s US steels used for Krag receivers and bolts. Also they were made with the guide rib of the bolt bearing on the receiver which would add some strength. Modern European 6.5×55 rounds are sometimes loaded to a CIP maximum of 55000 PSI, but 6.5×55 rounds marked "safe for the Krag" are loaded to a milder 40600 PSI. Since he's talking about cast loads the pressure he'll generate wouldn't be any higher than what I use in my US Krag.

Wild Bill,

That is one gorgeous looking thunder stick.
.
I'm thinking somewhere with the 150-200 grain boolit with modest loads should do you well!

Williams make a receiver sight for the Norwegian Krag. It can even be had with target knobs. Since it's not a collector type milsurp, drilling and tapping, if done by a good gunsmith wouldn't do it any harm. I can't say if any wood would have to be removed from the stock, or whether or not you'd have to have a higher front sight. I believe it mounts on the right forward of the bolt handle. http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/FPpage.htm The simplicity of the Rice is hard to beat. There was some discussion on the Krag Collector's Association Forum of getting the Rice reproduced.

That one has a teenie hole compared to the one on mine! Someone made mine big enough to center a P14/1917 front sight. Not very attractive out there on the end of the skinny barrel, but really functional. That must be one of those switch a sight Krags like I have! I see the Pacific base too.
