In Bo's Trapdoor the Lee 405 grn HB shoots very well with 59grs Goex FFg with the bullet seated to have a firm crimp over the front band. He uses the Federal 215m primer and a homemade BP lube, and no wad. Bullets are pan lubed and not sized.

I have used 65 grains of 2F under a flat based 405 grain bullet.

I drop tube the powder, seat a lube cookie and then seat the bullet.

No crimp, just neck tension.

These worked well for me in my old rolling block.

I have not, as yet, tried the HB bullet. I have the double cavity mold but not the time to cast and load!

Good luck

Well I had to go shoot today planned it a week ago, It was overcast with a chance of lite rain, ground was a little "muddy" and it was great ! The Lee boolit was POA with settings from last week, even hit consistently with the DD PRS holding high left. I had never been able to compress loads till now. I will be getting a compression die soon but what I used was a steel plate drilled for primer relief and the ram from a Lee .429 bullet sizer die in my arbor press.

Arbor press!!!! That ought to get the job done. Probably be able to get a hunert or so grains in there with that, might not get the cartidge in the gun though.:kidding:

I really dont like that much compression and so far my best load with the 405 HB was 67 grians of FFG Swiss droptubed and lightly compressed by the bullet. I don't use any wad and am using bear oil and beeswax as a lube. This will shoot into 2 1/2" at 100 yards for 5 consecutive shots and I can shoot 15 before I need to wipe.

I don't know for sure if it was the moisture in the air or what but didn't wipe once and only blow tubed twice. The load was only 55grn with grits to take up space for boolit seating. Heck I was only shooting 280-300yds

I turned a piece of Corian on my wood lathe to make a ram to use in my arbor press. Works great in 45-70 and 44-40. Yeah, I'm cheap!

Well I'm finding consistency compressing the charge lacking so much that I'm waiting on a compression die. I think with that my high and low hits (misses) will be minimized:-?
