View Full Version : Has anyone turned a 9mm mold into a 9mm Makarov mold

This post and question is just for curiosity. Has anyone ever honed or out or beagled a regular 9mm truncated cone or semi-wadcutter mold to .365 dia for 9mm Mak and what kind of results did you have?

That is a lot to change on a mold. You might want to start with a mold that already casts at .360 or so. Look for a lightweight mold for 357mag/38spl.

My Mak has to have a .364" dia. cast bullet.

That's a BIG increase for the typical 38 / 357 mold.

True, I was thinking of a mold that already casts at .359/.360. It would be less of an effort than from .356.

sell the 9mm mold and buy one accurate mold has several in its catalog fair prices and fast production

this is my favorite fits and feeds great

, if not i would paint some fine valve grinding compound in the rings of the mold and insert a cast boolit , like you are gonna leement it and spin er up on a electric drill .364-.366 should work shouldnt take too long ,,, iv heard of some shootin .356 i9mm bullets in their mak .. i wouldnt reccomend , but it isnt too far to go 9 thousandths

That accurate design looks like a TC design, how does it shoot?

Lee makes a Mak mold.(100 gr RN nominally .365-mine drops .367). That is the easy way to go.

it was my variation of one of toms molds i wanted the bevel base to ease case expansion without distortion of the case and to crimp it properly on a flat band i also wanted it to stop shaving lead this design helped with all of that , it shoots wonderfully i can get as good as 4'' groups at 40 yds standing , not really trying hard of course the e german pistol is a nice accurate gun in itself feeds flawlessly never jambs allways goes boom if memory serves i was loading with 231 powder , at @ 1000 fps
ps i went with the tc design as i figured it would rip flesh rather than separate tissue. due to the flat nose

oh yes , a makarov case is small so you will be limited to a boolit under 125gr. in order to shoot at any decent velocity. i can send you a few cast boolits if you would like to try em.

As long as I could find a $20 , Lee , Makarov mold, I wouldn't spend the time to modify a 38/357 mold.

I just bought the Lee 0.365 mold and it casts well. I plan to use 9mm Luger brass to make the Makarov brass. Anyone been there yet? Going tonight to get the Makarov dies.

Thanks everyone for the info. The Lee Mak mold is high on my list, but alternatives are always welcome in reloading and shooting  . Experimenting is as fun as shooting.

dondiego, I use a lot of trimmed 9mm Luger brass and have had great success. It is a little tedious to convert the brass but easy. I tumble clean then decap and form the luger cases in Mak dies by Lee. Then I bell the cases with the expander die and trim with the Lee case trimmer. I then resize the trimmed brass, prime, expand, charge and set the bullet as normal. Last thing I do is mark the head of each case with a sharpie pen to separate it from other brass and loaded ammo since the stamp still says Luger.

I use 3.5 grains of HP-38 behind a 93 grain RN Missouri Lead Bullet with OAL of .979, WSP primers and shot through a CZ 82.

Ever get any leading in that CZ82? I just picked up a couple CZ's
and had read about shooting cast in the poly rifling. They say not
to do it, but I think all that thinking came from the glocks.

I get a few small streaks of lead after 75 to 100 rounds, cleans up quickly with a little Hoppes #9 and a brush.

Forgot to ask, are they accurate?

So far they are more accurate than I am as a marksman. Your mileage may vary.

Here's an update. Badbobgerman sent me some of his 105 grain TC bullets that he cast and lubed. I finally had a chance to get to the range and do some comparison. First the tech facts,

Gun CZ-82
bore .3655
First loads
Case Win 9mm luger trimed to .700 with a lee 9mm Mak hand trimmer
powder HP38
charge 3.5 gr
primer WSP
bullet Missouri 93 gr RN lead bullet diameter .365
OAL .979

2nd load
Case Win 9mm luger trimed to .700 with a lee 9mm Mak hand trimmer
powder HP38
charge 3.5 gr
bullet Accurate mold 105 grain TC diameter .366
primer WSP
OAL .979
Factory rounds
Privi Partizian
93 grain RN jacketed bullet

All rounds fed perfect. Best accuracy was with the factory jacketed rounds. The Missouri RN and the Accurate TC were about equal. The targets below were all shot at 10 yards. All rounds shoot better than the marksman. The CZ seems to shoot quite low no mater what ammo is used. Point of aim on all targets were about 2 inches above the bull. I believe I have found the reason for my mild leading, the Missouri bullets are .0005 smaller than the grove of the bore (widest part of the polygon actually since the 82 has polygonal rifling) The Accurate bullets leaded less since they are .001 bigger and .0005 bigger than the bore. I don't have a chrono so I can't tell you what the velocities are.
