Not at all too much. I size down more than that but do it in steps about .002" at a time with the lube grooves filled.

And now you have the secret.

Definitely in stages of .002 or so.

I've sized a ton of .458's to .454 for use in heavy 45 colt loads.

I go .458 to .454 in one step & bullets are perfect. They are lubed prior.

Nose-first sizer dies used in a loading press..with generous die mouth taper work best for this.

Yes I agree with the nose first sizer. I lube first then size in steps nose first. You can size nose first in a Lyman or RCBS lube sizer as well as other types. You just remove the ejector assembly and push them straight through like a Star.
Sizing in steps nose first I size down from .515" to .504" . The purpose is to use a CF rifle mold for ML.
Works good and looks good if you don't try for too much sizing in one step. The looks good part is just as important as the shoots good for me because I sell boolits and they must look good as well as shoot good.

Thanks guys. I use the Lee push thru size dies. I may need to get a custom one made from someone on this site

Cant beat buckshot for that, tell him you are sizing .004 and he will probably cut the cone for that purpose.

Filled lube grooves is the key.

Appears everyone assumes the OP refers to larger caliber bullets. They are correct that a sizing down of .004" is not much of a problem for .30+ cal bullets of a relatively harder alloy, especially with the lube grooves filled and using a push through sizer.

However it is relative; if using a small caliber bullet (under .30 cal) and/or with smaller lube grooves and softer alloys it can be a problem, especially if they are PB'd cast bullets. The pressure of sizing them down can smear away the lube grooves, even with lube in them and can obturate/swage/bend and otherwise distort the bullet if sized too much.

I just did it yesterday :) All my 30 cal molds drop at 314 to fit my Argentine,
then I gas check and lube them at dropped as cast size.
Then if I need 313, 310, 309, etc - I just stuff them through the nose first lee style.

The purpose for the post is because: I'm in on the new A.C.E. Group Buy and I couldn't decide between the .432 or .434 my revolver boolits get sized to .430 and my Handi boolits are gonna get sized to .433 (now that I've decided). I was just worried about sizing the .430s if I went with the .434 mould. Thanks for the replies and I learned some stuff I didn't know

I had to open this thread to see if we were talking about boolits or brass, as I am almost ready to start reforming 357 Sig brass to fit a Japanese 8mm Nambu chamber. Sorry for the confusion.
