I have been using the standard Hornaday copper gas checks for years on my cast .357 Mag 150g LSWHP's and .309" - 150g LFP boolets for my .30/30 loads. I have noted that several sources are selling aluminum gas checks at a significant $ savings over the copper checks. My question to this esteemed and knowledgeable group; are they any good and worth switching to? Thanks...

I make sell and use aluminum checks. Reading all the post here and the CBA Forum, the consensus is if you stay under 2200 FPS they are as accurate as factory checks. If you would like to try them send a private PM with shipping info and I will send some free samples. No obligation you can purchase them from a lot of members here. James

Just finished a test with al. and lith checks on the gas check forum yesterday. I've already run loads with excellent accuracy up to 2200 fps in my 35 whelen. The lith checks were compliments of Sagebrush7(he knows his stuff when it comes to checks). And yes, they are definitely worth trying, especially as hard to get when you need em and as high as commercial checks are now.
You may or may not have to do a little load developement for them but it was worth it to me and so far all i had to do was take the filler out of one load @ 2200 fps. The hornady checks wanted the filler and the al. checks didn't....good luck...35shooter

Alum checks work fine but I have to say that my experience is not quite as straight forward as James states about 2200fps threshold. My .30-30 load pushes 40-1 alloy at 1700fps. An alum check produces 6 MOA accuracy. A commercial 'copper' check produces 2 MOA. The soft alloy needs a harder check to grasp the rifling.

I used Gator and Hornady checks in my 357 Mag and 22 K hornets, 222's and 223's. They shot great, I purchased a 22 cal. Free Chex III tool last year and went to litho plate checks. They shot just as good as the expensive copper checks. I just purchased my second Free Chex III tool last week in 35 caliber. The 357 mag Ruger 77/357 shoots them just as good as the copper checks. I know the 357 is only at 1550 fps but the K hornets are zipping along at 2550 fps. I'll never buy a copper check again.

prs i was referring to the lith plate like some news papers use to print on. Seems to be very uniform in thickness and crimp on very tight to the shank of the boolit. The ones i made for 35 cal. i couldn't pry off with a fingernail and they shot very well too, but so did some al. flashing i had on hand too.
