when sizing and lubing how many of the grooves should be filled ? what is the effect of filling all of them ? the picture is from a post made by 338remultramag.

Filling them all on a bullet like that can lead to too much lube causing reduced accuracy. That bullet has numerous grooves, maybe 6 to 8 and that is a heap of lube. Some people also don't like grooves containing lube outside the case neck to reduce the mess of getting lube getting everywhere and the chance of grit sticking in the lube.

In the end it is up to you to try lubing different numbers of grooves to find out what your gun likes best.

I can answer the 44 ??, there`s no written law sayin more is better but most of my 38/357 & 44 boolits are happier with 1 or 2 grooves filled . The only 1 I have with more than 2 for handgun is a 358091 & when I fill all 3 I get unexplained "loobe" flyers .

I`ve only been casting for rifle for a few yrs. & still have a lot to learn & exp , but just recently aquired a 311332 mold for `06 & it has 1 groove & a GC & up to 15-1600 fps it seems to be happy with the groove filled with Carnauba Red. I`m to the point I have to change to rifle powders to get more speed & maybe some lino in the rifle alloy .

I`m in the camp of not haveing loobe outside the case , but not above trying it as I increase speed to gain accuracy, the rifle will sign language in the form of small dots on paper in a tite group when happy!

Might even be able to lube just one. Try and see what happens. Lots of 38 wad cutters with 3 grooves get lube in just one and they are very accurate.

The accuracy change can be even at 25 to 50 yards.

The lube used can make a difference too.

In the end this is where experience helps. You develop a feel for things and can judge what is likely to work. I would suggest you try a few different loads with only the number of grooves lubed varying and see what happens.

I have made my revolver boolits with two and three grooves depending on caliber and they only hold what one large groove holds or a tad more. I find them more accurate then one large groove.
Then I made another with smaller grooves and I can't get it to shoot right.
It depends on the gun mostly so experimenting is always in order.
I need to buy a few extra grooves for the one boolit but prices have been too high! [smilie=1:

The "bottom line " is you won't know what a specific rifle or pistol will like until you send some test rounds down range.

The rifle / pistol / revolver will tell you everything you need to know about how many rings need to be filled.

I cast up a bunch of 3118s and lubed both lube rings and realized it was way too much lube. It has very deep lube grooves and both lubed was too much. There was lube all left in my cases and on the outside of the cases as well.

When an old military rifle with opens shoots this good at 50, I plan to do everything EXACTLY the same as before!
