View Full Version : Small 45 Blackhawk problem

Just got a 45 BH convertible. Shoots fine but the small pin holding down the front of the rear sight works loose from right to left. Thought putting a small bend it might make it stay put? Scared of breaking it, though. Anybody run into this or have a better solution?

I've peened them with a hammer to make them stick in the hole better a few times, it's a common problem. Loctited a few too.

Slight bend in the pin, no more problem. ( slight )
Replace with proper size finish nail or DE- capping pin if yo have a problem.

Slight bend should take care of it. I'm not into loctite. I've used the red stuff on other projects, and when you apply it correctly, it can be almost impossible to get to release, and I've had the blue stuff not hold well at all. I don't know why you'd ever need to remove that pin again, but I'd still rather be able to get it apart just in case.

This is a pretty typical problem. It shouldn't take much of a bend at all. In fact, if you can see the bend, you may have gone a little overboard.

Even using a pliers to throw up a small burr on one end of the pin can be enough.

This is a pretty typical Ruger handgun thing, all of mine do it.

I agree with all the above. Normal for BH. I just slightly bend mine and have no more problems.

Cool. I'll start wailing at it.

+1

bend it too much and you catch hell trying to get it to come out the other side after passing through the sight.

Simply squeeze the very end with Vise Grips to booger it a taste then tap it back in. Problem solved

I don't want any of you buggering nail benders working on my guns.

One drop of " service removable" Blue Loctite 242 applied with the end of a toothpick.

A VERY slight tap to the pin to give it a slight bend will cure it and not be visible.

Heck, I didn't even do anything on mine. I pay attention and push it back in when needed.

Maybe a slight Tap with a 3lb maul to 'peen' one end would suffice. ;)

I put a nick in the pin with a side cutter. Tap it back in and forget about it.

Take an old piece of hanger wire, A little rusted is better. It's over sized but it's soft metal.
Cut a piece the right size and pound it in with a heavy hammer, have someone help lift the hammer if it's to heavy.
The soft metal will give against the harder gun metal and form fit itself into the hole. The rusted surface will help with holding power. Or you can leave it a tad long on each side and peen the ends over with the same hammer.

Sadly I don't have any trouble imagining people doing just that.

Hmm, got some purple locktite. Might try that. BTW, is it true there's no such thing as a smaller hammer?

Must be something wrong with me. None of my Rugers have ever had a front sight pin loosen up.

Rear sight pin in mine. Never a front sight issue for me, just the rear.

Just looked at OP, he did specify the front end of the rear sight. That is the pin I have issues with also.

oops...I just read "front" and that was all my brain received. Doesn't make a difference as mine are all tight as well.

I've fixed a few, and caught a few other shooters at the range with this problem.. "Hey, you might want to put that back where it came from" :) I love the look on their faces when they spot it hanging on by a thread..

All this talk about using hammers reminds me of my first car. It was a 1964 Ford Galaxy. The repair manual said if it don't work get a bigger hammer.

The scariest part of this is the fact that these people are among us. And brandishing weapons, and voting, and reproducing.
