Now what do I do??

Wasn't sure where to put this , so please move if need be.

I've got a Contender carbine barrel and scope that I used to call coyotes with. I haven't shot it in several years. The camo tape I put on it has dried on. I've got the tape peeled off, but the glue is hard as a rock. What is the best way to get this nasty stuff softened up and cleaned off?

Goo Gone or mineral spirits. You didn't say what kind of surface you put the tape on. Metal will tolerate more aggressive solvents. If on the rubbery fore-end and grip, you might help the adhesive remover along with a nylon kitchen pot scrubber. If wood, be patient!

Stick it in the freezer for a few hours and see if it flakes off.

Happened to me on a Benelli. I tried it all goo, wd40, simple green, purple stuff, acetone, mineral spirits, sandpaper and some spots are still there.

There may be better products, but I happened into a Rem 870 Wingmaster cheap last year that had all metal and wood covered similarly in dried on tape. I peeled the tape off, stood it in a corner, and soaked it in WD-40. Let it sit, rub off what would release with a paper towel, repeat. It took quite a while, but it's clean, and no damage done. Be patient..

Try some bore solvent. That stuff is designed to dissolve gunk like that. It also is pretty darn safe on guns!

Just a case of finding the correct solvent for your adhesive residue.

I would cover a small area with a cotton patch and saturate the patch with the solvent and let it sit a while. This keeps good surface contact between solvent and goo. Time is your friend here.

I wouldn't use any oil on the scope near the o ring seals some solvents are not o ring friendly wd40 is a penetrant as are some others go slow and be careful.

Freezer for a few hours followed by a PLASTIC pot scrubber; worked for me on a trade many years ago.

GM used to make a special adhesive remover for use on cars with stick-on decals, check with your local body shop to see if they have it, it may work.

Would acetone work? Be careful of your stock though...

Wrap it in a cotton shop rag and soak it with mineral spirits or Goo-gone for a few hours. It should wipe right off.

You might try go-jo. Grandad used duct tape on a carpet to hold it down. After he passed away, needed to remove the old adhesive, so pull out the go-jo, too it right off with litte work.

The Blue 3M scrub pad and oil or Hoppes. The blue pad won't leave scratches. The green pad is more aggressive but will take bluing off.

Some WD40, a little time, patience and elbow grease and everything cleaned up nicely. Thanks for all the advice.

+1 for Kroil

I frequently use Hoppes #9 as a glue solvent but Kroil might work better if you have to penetrate the tape to get to the glue.

Naptha (lighter fluid) is a great solvent for the glue on labels, I used to use it to take off the labels from all the free AOL diskettes I used to get.
