So is there a chart or rule of thumb for this? Somewhere you are either too light or too heavy for a jacket, so is it all trial and error?

Every jacket has a different thickness. You just have to weigh the jacket and the core and come up with something that's reasonable.

You could use three different jacket lengths for the same weight bullet and get three different types of bullet points. Longest length of jacket would give you a deep open point, with most of the mass of lead at the rear of the bullet. Medium length jacket might give a small open point, or lead right at the tip. Shortest jacket would give you a lead tip.. The better question might be "What do I want to use this bullet for?"

if memory serves me right you were looking into 22 caliber?

Just to refesh the linked info some!:-D
Here's something from Berger:
.224 - .600 length - 30, 35, and 40 gr bullets -using 22 shorts or trimmed 22LR's
.224 - .705 length - 50 and 52 grain bullets- Using trimmed 22LRs
.224 - .740 length - 55 grain bullets- My untrimmed 22LR's run about .720"
.224 - .800 length - 60, 62 and 64 grain bullets- Using 22LR's 64 gr is MAX for my dies.
.224 - .930 length - 70 and 73 grain bullets. For my dies anything over 64 gr is using 22mag/17HMR case for jackets
.224 - 1.000 length - 75 grain bullets
.224 - 1.060 length - 80 grain bullets
.224 - 1.125 length - 90 grain bullets

Sure wish I had a chart like that for 190-210 gr .308 (.25 dia.) and 200-350 gr .458 (.40 dia). Trying to figure out the core weights for different jacket lengths. The max core length is 1". I know the jacket weight will dictate the core weight. Most every thing I found is use trial and error. I have tried to do the math and I get some really strange numbers. Should have stayed awake in math class more.
