on a Ruger #1 in 45-70
I was wondering if anyone has any idea how to do this?
Is it something a feller can do in the comfort of his own cave?or is it a deal that needs outside intervention?:Fire:

What does the sight look like? My No.1 theres a plunger you push down and tap out the blade from The base.

.

You'll need to cut & recrown the barrel just to the rear of the front sight band/ramp, to get a smoothie - then replace the sighted quarter-rib with a clean rib (no rear sight dovetail) from a Model 1B, to avoid the bubba-look.

are they not pressed or soldered on? I would hate to cut the barrel...

Per Kevin Kelly of Magnaport:
He told me that one must remove the front sight blade.
(Push down on the detent button and slide forward.
Be Careful of the button and spring that is under pressure...
I.e: Make sure you capture it or lose it forever.

Kevin told me that he sets it up in the milling machine and cuts a slot in the bottom of the barrel band. Then very carefully splits the band and off it comes. I understand some have an allen screw under the front blade.
I have seen one barrel that the band had been removed.
There was/is a large amount of silver solder where the band was or maybe just no finish on stainless steel barrel.
I would assume one could heat it up and remove it.
And you'll need a good way to apply force to have it slip off the barrel.

Either way, you are mostly likely going to sustain bluing damage where it was.
Cold blue MAY touch it up, but don't bet on it.

Or you cn chuck it in the lathe and turn off the sight to match the barrel and thn polish and reblue.
