View Full Version : Why would someone do this to a mold?

I obtained this mold with a group that I obtained in a sale. This mold is labeled 311359 but looks like it has been drilled out with a drill bit. Why would someone do this? Is it any good for anything anymore? If anyone has a use for it, they are welcome to it for the cost of shipping.

Was this supposed to be a new or a used mold? If it's used or it set up and rusted than perhaps someone tried cleaning it out. I sure can't see doing that though. Have you tried casting w/it to see if they meet specs? If they do than wouldn't the sizer clean it up? Regardless if it's a 30cal I'll take it and try it myself. PM me w/info and I'll send you the shipping fee and my address.

Looks to me like they were trying to convert it to a paper patch bullet mould which has no need for lube grooves and hold the paper better smooth.

It is used. The holes are around .380-.384.

Creekwalker, you are welcome to it, but it is not 30 caliber anymore.

It could be used to cast slugs for slugging a barrel...

I'd like to try it for a Paper Patched 38-55, if it's still available. PM sent.

If it's opened up as much as you've indicated happy then I'll pass on it, but thanks. By all means send it to jim, i'd like to hear how it works out as a paper patched bullet. I'd try that one myself if I had the right calibered rifle. Clever idea jim.

I think anyone who expects to get a shootable bullet out of that mould is dreaming.

The 'nose' is about the same shape as a drill bit, and the cavities have been enlarged so far...they cut into the locating pins.

Unlike some paper patch moulds (real ones) there is no way to adjust the bullet length, and those cavities are way too long for the diameter. If you don't have a super-fast twist in your barrel, you may as well use a slingshot to throw them downrange.

Looks like a paper weight to me. Kinda like the destroyed M1 rifle receivers and Colt 45 pistol s that the American people owned and the Gov. destroyed. :-?

What a shame.

Maybe use the slugs dropped from this mold as cores for swaging a bigger bullet?

Beautiful workmanship, created by a true tradesman.

obssd1958 is right with regards to the slugs being used for swaging. I have a bunch of these "Drilled ' moulds (not my doing) that were used for the purpose of casting cores for bullet swaging. Great for heavy weight bullets but not very practical for the lighter ones.

Machining right thru the blocks and then installing adjustable base plugs would be the proper way of doing it. Adjusting the core weight to within 30 grs or so of the final bullet weight would then be possible.

 What a waste, it was probably a very nice mould, scrap iron now. It's not even bored straight. look at the nose on each side of each cavity, it's lop sided.

Maybe someone needed iron shavings more than a nice mould.

Might be handy if your barrel is bore off center eh?

He probably just throated his rifle in the same manner and wanted a perfectly matching boolit.

I'm still trying to figure this one out:

I've got that one for sale right now in classifieds...I posted a long time about it, but I still have no clue. The white stuff is almost like a ceramic fiber/plaster mix. I dont get it.

People do some strange crap.

"I'm still trying to figure this one out"
