I was at the GSO gunshow, I had a table, I was selling a bunch of stuff. I had money in my pocket.

The dealer behind me had a bunch of Ruger American rifles in all caliber and configurations at the best price ever. (Well almost next to free)

I held out as long as I could.

I was going for a 243 Win in standard length. :)

They sold the last one that morning. :(

I had to settle for a 7-08. :)

so now I've got one. :)

Now I need some dies. :)

7mm/08 is a great round. I had one in a Stevens 200 and loved it.

I love the 7mm/08. If I had a custom rifle built that would be it.
I have a couple of 7X57's, but I like the 7mm/08 better.

The spirit is strong, but the flesh is weak, DJ! You NEEDED that rifle!

I think you'll like it. The 7-08 is one of my favorite cartridges. I think I remember you recently bought the same rifle in 308? I think someone's gonna get a good buy on a slightly used 308 soon:grin:.
Hope you enjoy it!

Speaking as a fellow who shoots a .243, if you're using it for deer, the 7mm-08 is a much better choice.

HA! 308 is staying! Now I have a matched pair. :)

I worked with a guy several years ago who had a Remington 788 in 7mm'08.
At a farm he hunted in west TN he took a nice 8 point buck at just over 600 yards with it. Got both lungs.
To ME, that was a ridiculously awesome shot.

7-08 is by far and away my favorite deer caliber.

Other than 35 whelen the little 7 is my favorite. H414 sure used to make itty bitty groups with sierra 140 and 175 gr. bullets, never tried it with cast tho. Good luck with it!

DJ, my only bolt rifle at the moment is a compact Model 70 in 7mm-08. Haven't got a deer with it yet. Seldom take it hunting because I keep reaching for the lever behind the trigger guard and there's none there! Besides that I haven't got myself a mold for 7mm yet. I must be some sort of fossil because of this. The 7mm-08 seems to be a really nice caliber. For sure, it shoots straight. To echo 35 Shooter, good luck with it. The Sierra 140, and Remmy Coreloct 140's are good bullets for it, in case you run out of boolits for your regular guns.

thanks, I think I'll try the NOE 7mm Hunter in it. :)

I've got a 243 and 308 and love'em both. If they'd come out with a 358 winchester I'd find a way for that as well.

I think you'll learn to love the 7mm08 cartridge. You can neck down 308 and be a tad short, or you can neck up a 243 and trim a tad. Or you can buy 7mm08 brass. Is this a boolit or bullet gun or both?

Settle for a 7-08 ? ? ?

Seems to me like you lucked out, with a better choice with much broader use/capabilities.

My son's rifle likes IMR 4350.I load 46.2 grs behind a Nosler 140 gr Ballistic tip. He can put those little 3/4" groups right in there. He killed a nice ten pointer with it at 225 yds.

Last week, was in a Cabela's store that had an American in 7mm-08. Managed to talk myself out of buying it just to see how well it shot. On way back, stopped at a Dick's Sporting Goods store to brouse. Darn if they didn't have the Ruger Americans on sale, but drat!. No 7mm-08s in stock, just 270s and 30-06s and I don't want or need anymore of them.

yea had to settle as I don't have anything for reloading the 7-08, yet.... heck even had to buy some ammo to start off with.

I do have a 7x57 and a 7-30 waters, so pleanty of projectiles. :)

FWIW, my preference for forming 7-08 is to neck down 308. Have not had any fit problems neck wise in Remingtons from 788s to M-7s or Winchesters. Even up trim lengths after case is formed, if needed. The regular F/L die works fine without the decap. Use clean tumbled cases and try to fire a 7-08 cartridge first to give you a headspace reference for the F/L work.

DJ, if you're still in need of dies let me know. I have a spare set of 7-08 dies. I'm gone this weekend (camp out) so don't be surprised if I don't get back to you until Monday

you'll like the 7-08. It's lethal out of proportion to recoil, extremely accurate and works with a wide range of propellants.
