View Full Version : 9mm bullet in a .357 bore?

This is not necessarily cast bullet stuff, but you guys know a lot so I'd like to ask you. I found a barrel blank that is for .357 magnum, but it's the closest I can find to the size and twist rate I want for a build. The build, however, is going to be in a 9mm caliber (.355). Of course, when I use cast this won't be a problem. But, will this be a problem if I ever want to use commercial 115gr fmj?

I wasn't sure if the .002" would be enough of a problem. My sig p226 chamber cast was .3565 (assuming I did it right, was my first one)... so can it be that much worse? Supposedly the blank's bore is guaged to within a couple tenths so it should be pretty right on to .357.

THanks

IIRC old Colt Python had .355" barrels.
I used to shoot some 9mm bullets but only using .38 Spl cases. With .357 cases cartridges were too long for the Python.

personally, if I were going the custom build route I'd have a barrel made to my specs.

I believe I've got a 9MM barrel blank in my shop. What are the dimensions you need?

You SIG chamber is going to mike larger than the bore. Mike the OD of a loaded cartridge, and then the bullet, and you'll see why. 9MM caliber firearms are seldom used with lead bullets, unlike .38-.357's, and are generally less variable in throat and bore diameters.

I was looking for a barrel 1" or preferably slightly larger to allow some error. The twist rate I wanted was somewhere near 1 in 20." I think ~1 in 15" would also work, but I was shooting for a twist rate on the lower end of the spectrum. The build is a carbine in 9x23 super comp. I'm going to use cast bullets of mid-to-light weight which is why I wanted the slower twist rate. I think the only other bullet I'd ever use is 115gr fmj in case I wanted copper.

I could have a custom barrel made but this is supposed to be a lower cost build. I'm in college and I don't really want to drop 250+ dollars on a barrel blank for a carbine. Maybe I looked in the wrong places though?

In case it helps, here is the barrel I was looking at:

I appreciate the offer Morgan. If you think the blank would work send me a PM and let me know the specs and what you want for it.

Also, I'm not sure what you meant in your last post. I mis-spoke when I said that the chamber cast to .3565, that was actually a measurement from the middle of the bore (I did castings from both ends and they came out about the same).

I once experimented with Taurus PT-99's and found they had a .357 groove diameter and a tight twist. I could keep factory (.355) ammo in 3" at 25 yds, but they really performed well with .375 boolits in the 135 - 150gr range, keeping them under 2" when I did my part. The best performer was a .357 dia 140gr Rem JHP backed by a snoot full of blue dot (can't remember how much). From a rest, one of the PT-99's would produce little clover leaf 5 shot groups. I could spank stuff with that one. My preference is for cast, but that one was too good to pass up and the owner was happy to have it.

Hell don't say that. Lead bullets are all I shoot out of my 9MM guns which include Tanfoglio, STI Trojan, FN HiPowers, Inglis HiPower, S&W M&P, & lastly CZ 85 (sold). In fact that is what most of the guys shoot at our IDPA club using their 9MM guns which include, Glock, CZ75, Dlask, Norinco and Sig 226.

I've got 2 nines that haven't seen more than 100 jacketed between them both. The Taurus PT111 has 500+ cast and the CZ85 has over 2000. I lost track of the # that went down the Ruger. Gianni

What bullet/bullets are you shooting?

I cast my own using Lyman's 356402 mold. Bullets come out at around 128 gr using WW alloy. I water quench them and size to .357. I use Felix lube. Never get any leading. Right now my load I use for IDPA PF 125 is 4.1 gr Win 231, OAL 1.115. Brass is either Win or Remington. I have found no difference in using either brass over my chrono. Avg Vel. 1090 fps out of 5" barrels. Load is accurate and soft shooting.
