I am looking for a starting point for a 220 grain plain base bullet. I have AA 5744, IMR 3031, and IMR 4895. Because it's a plain base, I can't start at 250 grain jacketed. The rifle is a Savage bolt. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Tom

25 gr. of 5744 with a 250 gr. Lyman gas check for 1734 fps would be my choice to start with what you got.

IMR 3031 .358" 2.760" 42.0 2260fps 50,800 CUP

With a plainbased bullet you will likely get heavy bore leading if you attempt to load very much above 1400 fps. So for a plainbased utility load, in the .35 Remington, .358 Win. or. 35 Whelen, with 200-250- grain bullet , using wheelweight alloy, I'd be inclined to try 8-9 grains of any fast burning pistol or shotgun powder you have lying around. Bullseye, Red Dot, 700-X, SR7625, W231, PB, Unique all work in this application. Use standard large rifle primers. No filler is necessary.

Is that a savage 110 that you have converted with the ER Shaw barrel kit? Been considering this myself. Like this sort of thing from midway:

This kit is available here in Australia although at $AUD400

Yes, I don't have mine back from a local gunsmith. KLR bought the same kit and is shooting his. Tom
