I have two 1886 Brownings in 45-70 that I'm thinking of throating deeper for cast. I have some chamber measuring to do prior to jumping in, but some questions arose on this when looking at the reamers.

I really like the Pacific throating reamers (https://shop.pacifictoolandgauge.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_71&products_id=1065&zenid=q1m8hl5u4gssc9gsgudjjns0t2), but they state that they will make them in whatever angle you like. So just what is the best angle for Boolits?

Thanks,
Ed

years ago i had clymer make a .459 reamer for me. i throated two 45/70s with it so i could set the bullets up into the barrel. they shoot very very accurate. are you just going to throat one gun and is a .459 throating reamer what you need? i had read back then a book about harry pope and setting bullets into the barrel. thats why i had it made and again with my custom moulds with a long bearing surface i can set the bullet further out in the case and into the barrel. works.

I think that you will be able to improve accuracy if you do it correctly. You will still be limited to the 2.8" max oal to prevent feeding problems.

Not to hijack your thread Kansas Ed, but would throating allow use of a 45-90 cartridge in a 45-70? (Speaking of Marlin 1895 in my case.)

You probably could shoot it single shot but it might not feed through the action. I believe the action is shorter on the Marlin 1895 than the Win 1886. Might depend on the bullet being used too, the oal would determine if it would cycle or not.

I think that I would prefer to go .460, but honestly am not sure. I figured if I did one rifle I might as well do both. One is a carbine and the other the rifle configuration. I know the Brownings have a negligible throat on them though, and just don't have much adaptability to different bullets.

I wouldn't want to try that, as it isn't deepening the chamber. You would need to rechamber to 45-90 first.

From what I've read a 3*included angle is the ticket. But I've also read that as small as 1 1/2* included angle works very well. This is a question I'd like to have answered as well.
