I picked up metal receiver760 pumpmaster for $15 today. With iron sights at 19 yards the stupid thing is shooting is small as half inch with nearly all groups into 1 inch.I am cheating and using JSB 8.44 exacts but I'll take it.seven pumps get them going 495fps.

Wow, I didn't know they made one with a metal receiver, all mine have been plastic, but my first one came along in '81 so go figure. I have shot some pretty good groups with mine also, but I've made my own peep, more like reapropraited one from 22.

The old ones had a rifled bore, later versions are smoothbore, but surprisingly accurate with BBs just the same.

Need to make sure the screw that fastens the barrelto the receiver is tight for best accuratcy

One of the great things about the Crossmans is that they all use almost exactly the same internals.
I recently rebuilt a 788 for my grandson that I had bought used for my son decades ago.
Just took a phone call and a few dollars.

My first gun I earned by selling seeds 46 years ago was a 760 like that. I really got good with that puppy and learned how to use kentucky windage, compensate for cross wind and don't ever recall shooting out any windows with it. That gun in my hands made me feel big time like my dad and his hunting buddies with their 760 remingtons!

the older I get the more I am regressing to simpler things. I went from 30 years of casting and competing in matches to muzzle loaders to air guns. Now its back to BB guns. My buddy swears it will then go to archery and finally throwing rocks. He said one day all I will do is walk by the river looking for the perfect ones. What he don't know is i have a sling I use quite often<G> really.

I put up three bulls at 25 meters tonight under the light in front of the shop. Using JSB 8.44g exacts the 5 shot groups were 1.6,1.25and 1.0.Not bad for iron sight and a bull I couldn't see super clearly. It shoots about 75% as good as my Hawke scoped $600 TX200.

Its all in the challenge isn't it? I also now prefer the more simple approach to launching missiles of any size!

My first air gun as well. Mine was handed down to the fellow I bought it from in 1975 for 10 bucks. It had the metal receiver a wooden forend a solid plastic stock, rifled barrel and a gold bolt. You could pump it up over 50 strokes and put 5 BBs in it for shotgun style shooting. Eventually I burst the seals and let the gun get away from me to an idiot who professed to fix it. Never seen again. I still lust for that gun. The new 760 is nothing like it except for a passing physical resemblance.

I never owned a 760 as a kid, but found one someone had discarded because the rear sight was broken off. I put a 4X Tasco on it and found that was all it needed.
I later fitted a wooden adult sized butt stock salvaged from a scrapped Plainsman. I haven't finished fitting that butt stock but it works as is. I also used a molded leather cheekpiece I had made for my savage .22. That brings the eye into line with the scope just fine.

I was very pleased with the accuracy and velocity of this little rifle in BB only smoothbore. At 25 yards it holds its own with most higher powered pelletguns. Dime sized groups for the pellet guns and nickle to quarter size groups with the BB gun.
It certainly made shooting 177 BBs alot more productive than other BBs I've owned or fired, outside of my little brothers Crosman M1 Carbine that is.

They really should fit this action into a cast receiver with tube stock similar in appearance to the old Quakenbush all metal BB guns.

[QUOTEnickle to quarter size groups with the BB gun.

that would be quite feat for a 5g steel BB.

Thats why I was amazed at its accuracy.
The comparatively heavy bored and reamed steel barrel of the 760 can deliver much better accuracy than the rolled and seamed barrel of the older style BB guns, the 4X scope helps alot as well.

ran some RWS 7g basics over the speedometer. Got 605 fps with 7 pumps. Not good shooting at 25 meters but with 5 pumps bugholed at 10 meters.
