I'm working on a source to obtain wheel weights.

I haven't started casting yet, but plan to melt some wheel weights into some bars and pucks before moving on to the next step.

My question is, how do I know what wheel weights to use?

You will need to remove the wheel weights that contain zinc. There are many process that people use to identify the zinc, and I don't know if one is better than an other, just read the responses and decide which will work best for you. There is also many differences of opinion on the clip on and stick on being separated or mixed together. Again this will depend on your situation. The place where I get most of my ww's usually only has the clip on and very few of them are the zinc kind. I seldom do more than 25 or 30 pounds to a batch and usually only do three or four batches at a time, so I just add what ever I have to the pot and the lead weights will melt first then I skim the zinc off with the other junk.

Read the heck out of this site, all the info you can use. Basically stick-on's will be close to pure, clip-on's may or may not be. There are exceptions even with stick-on. Easiest way for me is to test each one with electrician's side cutters (dykes), if it's soft, keep it, if it's hard, recycle it as it's zinc or iron. Read, read, read, expecially the stickies, all the answers are on this site. GW

Depends on how much you paid, and how much is actually lead. If you have a hard time denting it with cutters, it ain't lead. Anything that says ZN is zinc. Looking at the top of the pile, it looks like a pretty good ratio.

I get these at no cost.

100lbs at a time.

I seperate my clip on from stick on. I melt them in a pot on a gas ring and pour into thrift store muffin tins. I write on the what they are and keep them seperate. Clip on I save for harder rifle boolits, stick on I use for shotgun slugs and soft boolits for my old .38-55.
I get WW's free too, but only occassionally. I use range lead from a pistol range too.

I separate the clip on from the stick on and on the look out for steel (Fe) and Zinc (Zn). Get a set of cutters and a magnet. It didn't take long for me to be able to spot Fe very quickly. Lately I have been finding Zn that is NOT marked. If it is to hard to cut and not magnetic set it aside as Zn.

Did 1/2 a bucket today, dissapointing amount of zinc. Probably more stick on than clip on, and I'm starting to hang on to my harder clip ons and only use them when I need to.

I would separate the stick-on from the clip-on before smelting.

If you are casting for pistol, some people including me will mix 50% clip on ww with 50% stick on ww. The stick ons are essentially pure.

If you can add 1 - 2% tin to this mix it will help.

PS, I know the zinc and steel are frustrating, but you can sell the steel at a scrap yard. They may take the Zinc also. Besides, you are getting them for FREE?!![smilie=w:

I know most don't smelt wheel weights in a melting pot, but I find if I keep my melting pot below the temperature of the melting point of zinc that it's easy to skim it off like Goatwhiskers is doing. To speed things up I will run two Lee melting pots at the same time when I'm making ingots.

i'm guessing you do refrigeration or large drug deals?

any free lead is good lead, well done!

I do hvac as well and use my scale for wheel weights and lead all the time. The drug thing was a joke.

I also use it to weigh bulk brass, much easier than counting them.

I brass prep them, then package in groups of 500 depending on the caliber.

Someone said they use. Ktype temp probe for their smelting pot, so sticking with the hvac tools, I figured I could use or at least try these.
