After months of playin' around, I finally had 20 of 20 survive the 4000 fps barrier.....I think. All 20 were loaded the same, 40 grain bullet (CCI jacket) over 40 grains of CFE-223, suggested starting load. I had problems with the Magnetospeed chrony with the first 10. I reset "trigger" sensitivity for the last 10 and HELLO, 4000+ fps. All bullets hit the target but only the last 10 were documentable with the chrony. Max was a 4226 fps and min. was 4012 fps. No extreme pressure signs. Hodgdon lists a max load at 43 grains of CFE-223 for this weight bullet in a 22-250. I may have a little "wiggle room" to up the max fps. Accuracy was not my goal, only that they survive the 4000 fps barrier. Now that I know how to make 'em survive, I'll work on accuracy. I see some more 40 grainers in my future.

Very Cool!! Funny how once you get the basics and build your bullets correctly, they can do you want them to do! Now you need to get the accuracy down! It took me a month and a half shooting every weekend to get a load that was accurate.

Did you trim your jacket or shoot them as is? I found that if I used 22 shorts, I got a pretty nice looking 40 gn pill with a lead tip.

Again, NICE JOB!

I thank you.
Amazing what a clean bore and proper core seating will get ya. I used 22LR cases and trimmed 'em with my "ACME JACKET TRIMMER". 20 were okay, hate to do 1000 like that. Mine turned out 39.8 grains with a very slight hollow point. I've been fighting with that 4000 fps barrier for a long time, now I can move on. Ya gotta get 'em to survive before you can make 'em accurate. I'll wait for the new Criterion barrel for the accuracy tests. 'Til then I think I'll start playing with some "heavies" with 22Mags. 40's flanked by very early (and ugly) 55's. I believe I'm a little heavy handed with the core seating.

Ya don't fool me, ye're jest gonna cram them thangs in little tubes of brass, put some explosives behind them and blow them out'en a long tube and not be able ta find'em enymore. There ye've wasted all thet muny$ n' what ya got. Little yaller pointy pieces up led 'n brass that are............ ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS WORKS OF ART.

So would you describe your, diameter before seating, and diameter after seating?
How you measure your lube for both core seating and point forming?

Nicely done Supe! At least we put the vel issue to bed. Mine run fine up @ 3100-3200fps in the 223, as long as there are not flaws in the jacket. Sounds like you need a source for 22short brass, no trimming.

They look great. I could never get enough short brass, so I bought a jacket trimming die. That gives you wiggle room to play around with the cores and adjust the weight. For example, if you wanted to eliminate the OT, you simply shorten the jacket a touch and you're there! You might recall this picture from a couple of months ago, but the idea's the same. In my case, I wanted a tiny bit of exposed lead, so I trimmed the jacket back a hair. This was a LR case.

WRT your bullet prep, are you using an ultrasonic cleaner? I am, and do not have any dirt or lube left on the cores or the inside of the jackets. That's a key factor to putting together a good bullet. I am waiting for a new 6.5 litre ultrasonic to come in tomorrow. I need something larger and with a heat control.

supe47, Good to see you had success past 4000. It was probably a good idea to use the thicker cci cases for jackets on your test. You said you've been playin around for months on this, out of curiosity did you try any made with Remington cases made the same way you made those? If so, what was the result?

I did try some Rems but they were made in a slightly different way so I can't compare the two results. I will be testing the 40 grainers again. I'll try 'em with different cases. This last batch I seated the core a bit harder than in previous batches and shot 'em through a clean bore. I also seated the bullet a bit deeper in the case. Those short 40 grainers don't give ya much for the case to grab. I have a 9s ogive die on order. You know I'll have to make up a few just to see what they look like. I don't know if they'll even be shootable.
