I know a guy selling Safe-Flo Lead Free Plumbing Wire Solder they come in 1/2 lb spools and he has around 50 lb that he looking to pretty much give away! I have no use for it unless I can use it for boolits! I guess what I'm asking is that is this stuff any good for casting boolits?

It probably has around 95% tin content and the rest being copper, silver, and whatever. How much is he wanting per pound for it?

He wants $25 for all of it!

For that price, I would jump on it. Even if it is not acceptable for casting, you should be able to sell it for more than that on Craigslist.

Most of that will say 95/5 on it. That is 95%tin and 5%antimony. I use it all the time in my melt.

Water safe solder is usually 95/5, can be 95/4.5/ .5silver. The trace of silver aids fill-out and adds just a tiny bit of hardening. I had to buy some copper fittings at Menards last week, water safe solder was selling there for $25/lb.

Mostly tin, with copper, silver & bismuth. Use like tin, the other stuff will be so dilute as to make no difference. Get it.

Probably dandy for shooting weirwolves, or when leaving silver bullets as calling cards:bigsmyl2:

Real Silver solder requires acetylene to melt (braze) and is used in some gunsmithing tasks, such as front sights....it is very expensive, hard, and not of any use to boolit casters.

Buy it all right now. Check this out:

basically solid tin. Not enough of anything else to make a difference in anything, after mixed with lead. You can treat it like pure TIN, and for the price, it's pure gold! buy and use for sure.

Silver solder comes in sticks not on rolls. I looked up the solder in the OP and it should do well for casting.

MSDS in post #13. excellent source for tin.

Amongst other things I use a silver solder stick that is 15% silver. A MAPP torch works great, I use it to join brass bits and pieces. Solder with a higher silver content is available (and has a lower melting point) but isn't easy to find here and is exorbitantly priced!!

I think folks are mistaking silver solder for what is being called "silver solder" now.....real silver solder is mostly silver and quite expensive, and will not melt in your pot......what they are now calling "silver solder" has little or no silver in it, mainly tin and is good for your melt. My silver solder is thin wire and very hard, much different then anything that will melt in a pot.

If you haven't bought it yet shoot me his contact info and I will....

I got close to 16 full 1# rolls from a coworker who had been in construction before he came to work for us. They used it in office buildings, schools, and hospitals for potable water.

Every roll of it is 95 tin 5 silver, and it works great to sweeten up lead with. Go get it, get it, get it.

95/5 SILVER? not 95/5 antimony? man, you have some great gunsmithing solder there. You should sell that as real good stuff, not just some junk to sweeten lead with tin.

The electronics industry does make a silver solder that is mostly tin with a low silver content. Something to do with preventing crystal lead creep that can short out really close pins(stuff is down to .05 inch now and less). I used it at the casino for board repairs, we had to in order to meet the requirement to keep the boards certified for use in a slot machine. Here is an example

http://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10001_10001_2113172_-1

% of Tin 96.5
% of Silver 3
% of Copper 0.5

Not worth the trouble. Silver solder has its place. Its excellent for sight repair and has Mary has mentioned it has its place in electronics.

Most likely 95% Tin and 5% Antimony, maybe a bit of Silver, but not enough to matter. It is the same as, or better than, Pewter which I see selling on this site for $8.00+ per pound.

Even if if it has more Silver, then it is worth more for the Silver!!!!

I would "Buy It All"!

What about rosin or acid core? Does that matter?

Like I have been trying to tell people solder is worth about $20 a lb and you can buy a lot of lead for that lb of solder. Acid core has no place

Well I sure would take a pound or two at that price. PM me if you ever want to part with a little.
Us poor folk got to ask.
