Any one make a barrel blank that would be a correct replacement for a 26" round barrel in 38-55?
Have checked GM, a place in Montana, no luck, as they are wrong profile.

Wind River makes replacement barrels for 94's. Midway carries them. You might take a look at Wind River's and Midway's websites.

Just remembered that Buffalo Arms has a half octagon threaded, blued, chambered 38-55 barrel for 94's on sale for $150!

Check with Nash Buckingham, 501 Eaton-Brazil Road, Trenton, TN 38382, (731) 559-4169 or -4357. He has an enormous stock of original and reproduction parts for all the older Winchesters.

Oneokie,

I'll probably be in the market for a replacement 20" round barrel soon myself. I've got a saddle ring carbine made in the early twenties with a slight bulge. I didn't give much for it and just stuck it in the safe. I've been wondering if it would shoot now for nearly two years, but just never got around to finding out. My money is on not. If Santa brings me the rest of what I need to work up some ammo, I'll soon know. It's a nice rifle and I really like the .38-55. So, if I have to re-barrel it I will. Keep us posted as to what you find out in regards to barrels, because like you, I haven't seen much out there. I really find that kinda odd.

Trailblazer, thanks for the information. Wind River has several choices in 38-55.

floodgate, Had forgotten about Buckingham's, did check with them several years ago, good thing I was sitting down.

eka, for the 20" barrel, GPC would be a good place to check. Sometimes they have 24" barrels also.

I've had pistols with buldges in the barrel, seemed to work ok, got dirty quick though.

loudenboomer, I'll keep you in mind and I appreciate your willingness to sell your barrel to help a friend out. When Santa brings the rest of my goods, I'll see if she shoots, hopefully like Mick was saying. If not I guess it's plan B. And in this case, I guess B would be for barrel. Me and lady luck have never been what you would call tight, so I'm not holding out much hope.

Thanks,

Keith

If nothing else you could have the bulge fixed and the barrel relined.

I thought about that too JH and called Randy Redman and talked with him briefly about that when I first acquired the old rifle. When I told him it was a 38-55 he said once he bored it out the barrel wall would be too thin and it wouldn't work. If I understood him right. Anyhow, he didn't recommend re-lining it. He said I could get a .30WCF and re-line it up to 38-55. Sooo, kinda left me scratching the old noggin again.

Still just amazes me that with all the old Winchesters made that there is not re-barreling options all over the place. Those old barrels must be holding up great because there doesn't seem to be a lot out there. A few options, but not as many as one would think.

Yea I never gave that a thought the bigger the bore the less metal you have to play with.

"A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have."
President Gerald Ford in his Presidential address to a joint session of Congress August 12, 1974

I always thought that Davy Crockett said that first. Don't know where I got that from, probably here.
