I'm trading a buddy at work a pound of Varget for either 231 or WSF. I'll be loading 105 SWC, 125 RN, and 124 TC 9mm. These will be powdercoated. Which of the two would best suit me?

there's a lot more WW231 data around for what you're planning on using it for than there is for WSF. That would incline me to go for the ww231.

I will recommend what will probably not be the norm. I absolutely LOVE WSF. However I have not seen any in over a year anywhere. I have used WSF exclusively for over two years for all of my pistol loads. The way I tell people, imagine if you could have a powder like Unique that burned cleaner when not near maximum charges and metered better, that's exactly what WSF is.

Due to not finding it I had to switch powders a short while bcd as I'm down to 1# of it. But if WSF was readily available it's all I would use. I was put on to WSF years back by a commercial loader and blessed the day I followed his advice. In certain calibers the load data for Unique and WSF is interchangeable.

One of my pet loads in 9MM is a 124gr Plated with WSF and it mimics the Winchester NATO 9MM ball ammo perfectly.

231 is my go to for ball loads in 45ACP. I use it for defense loads in 9MM under 147 gr HP's

I would say WSF as well for mid to upper loads in particular with the heavier boolits. The 105 grainer may be better served with 231 though especially if you are not planning on mid/upper loads. 231 will work well with all three boolits if your intent isn't on the top side and you are looking at mid and soft target loads. Since you are powder coating you may have a little more wiggle room for mid/upper loads with the 231.

For 9mm I strongly recommend WSF.

Mixed responses...about what I expected. I'm thinking of going with the WSF for the simple fact that I can get a slight bit more power out of it. Thanks!

Score another pound of Varget and get em both! Seriously, if you're leaning toward more power get the WSF.

I use both 231 & WSF extensively but for 9mm - WSF really shines.

WSF my 2nd choice for the 9 Super Target #1 found both shot more accurate in my 9's than 231.

231 gets a lot of ink...have some but haven't cracked the seal yet...was using WSF in my 10mm and now also in my 9mm with all my cast boolits

A+ for WSF in the 9mm & 38 super

For me, 9mm = WSF. There is data out there for it, not too hard to find.

Nice score! I wish I could find some WSF. I really have been wanting to try it in .40 and 9mm because of the good reviews.

Where in the world did you find that treasure…..?

WSF is one of my go to powders in 9mm. It is an excellent choice but don't remember the charge offhand and don't have my load data handy.

231 is also known as a good 9mm powder. There have been several threads on here about it.

When choosing a particular powder and you don't have many available, look at the applications of the powders you are choosing.
