The chambers on the 1858 Remington reproduction revolvers produced by Pietta are usually around .446" or so diameter, so concocting a decently fitting boolit is kind of a problem.
One way would be to size the back end of a lighter weight .45 slug to slip into the chambers and leave the front driving band large to shear on the chamber mouth. The other way is to get a mold to approximate that geometry and that's what might be best. Have any of you guys worked up a boolit design for loading the Pietta .44's?

A round ball is better in the Rem. The chambers are so close, gas from the gap will cut up a boolit nose in the next chamber.

No I haven't, but I have seen some past Lee moulds that were made for it at about 160gr. Lee doesn't make it anymore, but it comes up on Ebay or GunBroker every once in a while. It was similar to the one they made for the Ruger Old Army, but a little smaller in diameter (about .450" instead of .457").

I was using .454" RB for a while, but had problems with the chamber to the left of the one I was firing letting off at the same time (partial chain fire). It happened fairly regularly. I changed it to a .451" RB with a lubed patch. Also went from a #11 cap to a #10 cap and pressed it on harder. Haven't had a chain fire since.

when I had a walker colt repro. I would use 45 colt bullets that were stepped down for a gas check. cast from pure lead with out a gas check they started in straight.

Chain fires in a cap and ball are just about 100% from the rear, not fire going past a ball.

Have A Gunsmith ream open your chambers to a size that matches your bore.
