View Full Version : Right top-punch for Lee 358-158-RF ?

I just got a new Lyman 4500 Luber-Sizer and getting to know it.

I like the Lee 358-158-RF boolit, and I read I needed 'G' top-punch number 429 (Lyman)

I used that top-punch, but it seems to be marking the top of the boolit making a ring.

Anyone suggest a better top-punch ?

Thanks if anyone knows.

[Edit]

here's another pic, the punch seems perfect for my Keith 358429, just wonder if there's a closer 'fit' for the Lee

FLAT.
I use flat on all my SWC and RNFP. I find it gets em started straighter and works better.

Appreciate the link. trouble is, I found the 495 leaves a ring, it works but isn't really a fit. Anyone know the number 43 shape can comment?

Going to order a Flat as per Docs' advice, once I figure what number it is. After all this time, still no visual profile 'reference guide' on the various top-punches.

[Edit]

Just by chance found a reference on a main online supplier, with comments from customers. I found this:

The Lyman #43 is the one you need! #2786691 it has a big enough area so that it does not put marks on the bullet

The Professer on this forum makes great top punches, you can get one that is flat or ones that are custom conform able by adding epoxy to his hollow punches and running a Boolit into it until the epoxy sets. Tim

Yep the Perfessor is your man.

He does flat or cupped punches mainly for you to use with epoxy to get your top punch an exact match to the boolit profile, but with that boolit a calibre size flat top punch will do well.

It is especially good if your 4500 has alignment issues which some seem to have had, the flat top punch will allow the boolit to self centre.

The witness marks of the top punch you are using seems to be equal all the way round the boolit so doesn't look like yours has an issue.

The witness marks, if even around the boolit, do not create performance issues in them selves and are just cosmetic.

I have a hole list of Top Punches On S & S with size and tip shape.

If you see any you like, I'll see if I can match up one for you from your pictures.
Looks like a 9mm & 38 in a FN or RN FN , some are marked HP would work also.
