View Full Version : SWC in Springfield XD .45?

My go-to bullet in my Springfield XD has been the Lee .452-200 RF 2 cavity (mine cast 211 gr. with range scrap) but the mould is plumb wore out (10K worth of bullets). However, I have tried two different (only other .45cal pistol moulds I own) 200 gr. SWC bullet Lyman 1960's vintage /SAECO 1950's vintage moulds and they both jam horribly, i.e. empty stuck in gun, second round has case mouth torn before even feeding. It looks like the ejected case rim catches on the next round in the magazine. I've tried different powders, seating depth changes, crimp changes etc. Does anyone else have this same "problem"? Solutions?

I have the Lee 200gr TL SWC. I can't get it to cycle reliably in my XD either. I just ordered the 200gr RNFP mold, I know they will work as I've used them before. I'm just going to give up on the SWC's.

In the pre XDm .45's, there is a flat spot on the bottom of the slide that catches on SWC bullets, and they won't feed them. You'll need to find another bullet design for the Service Model XD in .45 acp.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys.
I'll just have to bite the bullet and get a new mould or trade my SWC moulds.

Look into truncated cone style bullets.

The Lee 230gr. TC feeds great, but any variation of the H&G #68 (SWC) will turn your XD into a pump action pistol.

I have a XDs 45 and it shoots the Lyman 452460 with no problems.

They fixed the SWC problem when they came out with the XDm, and carried it on to the XDs. My .45 acp Service XD won't feed them at all, and I've never tried SWC bullets in any of my 9x19 XD's, nor my 357 Sig XD. My 9x19 XDm is only fed jacketed bullets, so it will probably never be tested with a SWC bullet.

Hope this helps.

Not " a flat spot on the bottom of the slide". The early guns would drag
the extracted case HARD over the next up round in the mag. If there was a step
in the boolit like a SWC, the extracted case rim catches on the step, popping it
out of the extractor and it is laying there when the slide comes back. Failure
to eject and nasty jam.

Later guns had a big lump made on the bottom of the slide to depress the top
round in the mag as the slide runs back, so the extracted case clears the boolit,
and they feed SWCs just fine.

If you don't know, pull the slide off the frame. If you don't see an obvious
hump in the slide bottom center rib, just behind the breech face location, it
is one of the early guns. Pulled one apart at the LGS and the hump is obvious.

I took a shortcut by saying "flat spot". I was in a hurry and didn't have time to type all that explanation out. Thanks, Bill.

OK, just clarifying so somebody could see if the particular pistol was Ok with
SWCs. Lots of wild stories floating around on guns, so I always try to put out
the straight stuff. Not meaning to step on toes.

I had some issues with my XDS, I attached a link to my post and solution. I've found a similar throat issues on other "friends" XD pistols. Good luck.

Had no issues (and minimal leading) in an XDs with 250 or so 200 gr. SWCFB's (sized .452, 1.245" OAL). These were cast from isotope lead, pretty soft, probably no more than 9-10 BHN, I'd guess. Quite happy as this is my only 45ACP mold. Wife carries this gun with XTP's. Many more 230 gr. RN's (store bought) have run perfectly also.

BTW, shot 30 rounds of this same lead thru a stock Glock 23 barrel today. No leading in front of chamber and a tight patch afterwards made barrel pristine. No more cleaning needed. This was a Lee 401-175-TC boolit. Not a comprehensive test, granted, but some have reported leading in as few as 6 or 7 rounds in Glocks. Loads doing right @900 fps on my chrono. More testing coming.

Yep, what bhn22 said. My standard is the Lee truncated 230gr bullet over 5.9gr of Titegroup for my XDs.

Easy to cast, load, and always reliable. FWIW, I would buy the 6-cavity; this 2 at a time takes me all day..........but worth it.
