This photo was on the MSN news page this am. I am wondering what this weapon on the right is. Looks like it is about the size of an MP5 (or smaller) with a big can on it. Magazine looks about right for Russian 5.45 ammo but hard to tell. Scope looks like it came from a local gunshow.

Thanks guys. Very interesting little rifle, and a cartridge that I have never heard of too! Gas piston fixed to the bolt carrier? Never seen that before....

It would be interesting to have a assualt rifle made out of steel....and a little plastic...

Caliber - 9mm? (9x39? x45?)

9mmx39? Sounds a lot like .351 WSL - or .401 WSL (the ORIGINAL "Hammer of Thor"!)

It looks like they're going to be calling the other guy in the first picture "righty" soon.

I've seen it called 9x39 Grom, and while not imported somebody is making the .358 Gremlin equivalent for AR platform. I thought this would be an interesting conversion for a CZ527 mini-Mauser (from 7.62x39 brass) using a twist rate for lighter boolits at higher velocities. Kind of a bottleneck .357 Max. That project is on my list between rebuilding my autogyro engine and learning to play the concertina.

Damn. I'll just give up on that concertina and focus on the autogyro where I am less likely to embarrass myself. That guy is the Ed McGivern of concertina, whoever he is. Or maybe I'll build me a "subsonic" Russian special forces concertina. By the time you hear it, it's too late.

Doesn't that still need some modifications?

"Gas piston affixed to the bolt carrier. . . " like an AK.

Like the twin 30s in the nose on that autogyro but how do the rear rockets clear the prop when you fire them... :)

Looks like Q put them out far enough to clear

big difference between 2D drawings versus a model mockup! ;) questions answered.

Open cockpit. When those rockets pass, I wonder how it compares to leaving your fingers next to the cylinder gap on a mag revolver.

Other than that, the concept is exactly what I need to counter those black UN autogyros over my north Idaho compound.

Bill valiantly tried to get this thread back on topic. I cannot speak to the piston, the photo is not clear enough and I don't know Russian auto designs.

But the cartridge is interesting. I have read that the ammo is AP so has not been imported and there are no dies etc. available. But necking the x39 case up to .357 seems like a natural. The .223 case could be necked up to an interesting 9mm, but the length of the resulting straight case has supposedly been a feeding issue in the attempts.

The CZ mini-Mauser, or the Ruger Mini 30 would be an interesting platform. But the Ruger is not nearly as cheap as I remember from the days when I walked 6 miles to school uphill both ways.
