View Full Version : HS-6 vs Unique in .45 Colt Perceived Recoil

In an article http://www.handloads.com/articles/default.asp?id=12, John Linebaugh indicated one of the loads he used for his S&W 25-5 in .45 Colt is 13 grains of HS-6, a 260 grain Keith boolit, for a velocity of 925 FPS. In my S&W 625 .45 Colt I am loading 9 grains of Unique, a 270 grain RFN boolit, for a velocity of 929 FPS.
Is there any perceived difference in the recoil between the two?
Would there be a reason to use one powder over the other?
Thanks

I use both those loads, and I think you will find that the 13.0gr of HS-6 load does a lot more than 925fps. In fact, in this article:http://www.customsixguns.com/writings/dissolving_the_myth.htm, John lists it at 1050fps which I am more inclined to believe. I know it is much closer in velocity to my 18.0gr of 2400 load than it is to my 9.0gr of Unique load. Just MHO.

Same velocity from the same boolit will yield only a very slight bit different recoil between those two powders. HS-6 will push more where as Unique will hit with a shorter recoil impulse so perceived recoil will seem a bit less. The muzzle won't climb as much with Unique. Not much difference in my opinion but can be noted.
