I have a JC Higgins 12ga 583 20 that I have had for about 40 years... Its a bolt action 12 ga that I am in the process of re-working....

Problem is, there is a small screw that acts as the bolt retainer screw. It keeps the bolt in the gun when cycling the action.... And I need one... There is about no place to find one.... I cant even find a reference to how long it needs to be or anything....

Anybody have any ideas??? Here is a pic. I really need one to make this oldie from the 50's a shooter again.... And No i dont wanna sell the bolt...

Have had those in both 12 ga and 410. I think it is a fairly common dia and thread. It would be very easy to make. Check with known dia. and pitch screws. The head is a fillister or "cheese" head. Hardware stores usually carry an assortment. If you can't find the right head type just get a regular hex head, chuck it up and turn the head down with a file. Get a screw that is slightly longer than is needed.

Insert bolt and run screw in until it contacts the bottom of the raceway in the bolt. Cut length until the fully-turned-in screw is just short of contacting the bottom of the raceway.
Done.

You could buy a gunsmith screw assortment kit from many suppliers [good to have on hand] and find the right screw for the threads. Length can always be cut down. Most all gun screws have odd thread pitch not found in local hardware stores.

Do you have any idea who made it. Mom bought a mossburg 26 gauge in 64 iirc, but no idea who built the higgins. For some reason I never warmed up to that bolt action, but two of my squirrel hunting buddies when I was a kid had them in 20 gauge.

AlaskanGuy,

Your shotgun was manufactured by High Standard for Sears and Ragbag and sold as the Model 10 under the J.C. Higgins name. There were minor variations throughout the years, but all were the same basic shotgun.

The screw you are looking for is, I believe, the "Bolt Stop Screw". Gun Parts Corporation has this part listed and in stock. Bolt Stop Screw J.C. HIGGINS | 583.1, 10, 583.10, 583.12, 583.4, 583.7 (http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/329690B.htm). This should fit your 583.20 as well.

Hope this helps.

I've spent some time in Cordova.. Finding a screw is a problem if you want one that's not rusted solid! [smilie=1: :drinks:
