Just wanted to shoot some of these in some short barreled 38sp. Thinking about PBGCing some to see what happens. Anybody else play with them?

If you like those, I expect you'll like these better.

If I didn't have a WFN/HP mold for my .38s on the way, I'd buy some of those just to experiment with and try to duplicate the old 'FBI load'.

That's what I'm thinking

The lead in the Hornady bullets are a little harder than most swaged bullets, but they should expand if pushed hard enough. I shot a lot of their HBWC's, and they expand nicely if shot reasonably fast.

What is the point of the PBGC in this cartridge? You can shoot dead soft alloy
at max .38 Spl velocity with zero leading and no GC.

Works as well in .357 without the GC but would blow up on impact. No need for
soft alloy HP in .357 at full power. GCs unnecessary in pistols.

I'd imagine that these would expand well. Book claims 1500 fps, but I imagine with 6" bbl and loss
between cyl and bbl it would be more like 1400 fps.

I used 5.5 gr Unique under either the Hornady or Speer LSWCHPs to effectively duplicate the Win/Fed "FBI" 38 SPL +P load. I have measured the psi and it is within the +P SAAMI MAP for the 38 SPL. Accuracy and performance (expansion) is as good as with the factory loads.

GC'd cast bullets may not be "necessary" for top end 357 magnum loads (1400+ fps) but with a correct alloy they can be cast softer, will expand very well, give better terminal performance and will not "blow up". No, they are not "necessary" but they sure do work better.
