Finally took my gun out today and tried it at 100 yds.
The gun seem to really like the Saeco #17 350 gr GC bullet. It drops from the mold about .460, my barrel slugs .458 and I am currently sizing .459.
I am using Lyman #2 alloy and carnauba red lube.
My load was 43 gr of Rel #7 No leading and I figure I am getting close to 1700fps. Nice fairly mild load to shoot off the bench. I got four shots in MOA and one out about 1/2" Not bad for the first load made for this rifle. I am using a 1.5X5 Leupold scope with heavy duplex. This gun seem to have a good barrel. I am impressed with it.Just though I would post. Anyone looking for a good shooting bullet for the #1 in .45/70,this seems to be a good one.

Hi Clay,

My experience is that every 458 cast bullet I've tried has been good, from 300 to the heavyweights. I have one mold that a fellow here sold to me because it didn't perform well in his Ruger No. 1 45-70. It works beautifully for me, and in fact I consider it my favorite 45 rifle mold. It is a 350 grain LBT LFN GC four-cavity mold. I'm glad you're getting good results. The 45-70 is a grand old cartridge.

Take care, Tom

I believe the .45/70 is one of the better calibers in the Ruger #1
I like these middle of the road loads. Not top end, but not black powder velocities either. It is comfortable to shoot and still has plenty of power. I wanted to kill a deer with the load, but never saw one I want to shoot. Maybe next year.I am very pleased with the rifle so far.

for the investment i have had such good luck with this Lee mold ... the 405 grain hollow base boolit. it does well in just about everything i have run it in. not bad for a 20 dollar investment. tryed it when it was new with little luck for some reason but ... now a couple years later it seems to have matured into an adult boolit that loves to shoot well in all my 45's.

surely IT was the one to mature dont ya think?

Hi Ted,

What speed do you run those bullets?

Take care, Tom

Tom,

i run em at bp velocity's ... around 1300 to 1400 fps. some loads ARE blackpowder and some are of the smokeless variety. i have even sized it to .452 and patched it with fair success. great boolit and very affordable mold from Lee ... at around 20 bucks a feller can play with it and still not break the bank.

just a note on the mold ... ensure that the bottom button is heated with the rest of the mold ...as... if this is cool then the skirt will be wrinkled and wont work well in any firearm.

It is a nice looking bullet. I may get the mold to use with black powder in my Sharps saddle rifle.

Just got that mold ,but too late for this season . Will have it up and running to use in my Sharps with a load of black powder for next year.

My load was 43 gr of Rel #7 No leading and I figure I am getting close to 1700fps.

This does not sound right. Im using 42gr of reloader 7 with a 405-430gr boolits and doing 1750. Out of a 1895GG.
If I shoot them out of the Buff Classic, they go too fast, so I reduce the charge.

Them 350s should be haul donkey

I have not checked it with my chronograph, just going by the numbers in the manual.Should be close though.
