View Full Version : Hooray For Hollywood! (With apologies to Benny Goodman ...)

OK ... so I have a friend (several in fact) that seem to "scrounge up" lots of old, used reloading equipment and components so whenever they come up with something old, weird and unusual they normally call me and say: "Hey ... you should come and buy this stuff!"
Got one of those phone calls offering me several thousand 12 gauge .135" nitro cards and 3/8" and 1/2" fibre wads plus about 3 clay target boxes full of vintage once fired paper target hulls. (Sadly I'm a sucker for paper hulls and cards and fibres and can't say no to more when offered ...)
When I got over there he immediately foisted the paper hulls and card and fibre wads onto me (even loaded them into my truck so that I couldn't change my mind!) and then he said that there was some leftover old reloading equipment that I should probably have too. (He kept the powder, primers and plastic wads for himself.)
After we dug our way into the corner of his garage there was a huge cardboard box full of reloading "goodies" that we dug out and dragged into the daylight to sort through it and lo and behold ... there was a Hollywood 12 hole Turret Press (nine 7/8 x 14 and 3 large thread c/w three 7/8x14 adaptors), chock full of dies and c/w with 4 shell holders, a Hollywood press setup for shotshells c/w with two 12 gauge shellholders, shotgun dies, and 2 Hollywood adjustable measures! Along "for the ride" was a Lyman #45 Lubri-Sizer (with a .358 die), an RCBS Uniflow powder measure and a vintage Ideal No. 5 powder measure c/w it's original lid still screwed on (and neither of the two retaining screws are missing or broken!). He just wanted it all out of the house and nearly begged me to take it all, so an EXTREMELY reasonable deal was very quickly brokered and I loaded it all up and drove home a very happy camper indeed.
The reloading dies included: a W.S. Vickerman (Moses Lake, WN) universal seating die with .30 calibre insert, a pair of Weatherby brand dies with a "Universal" sizing die and seater with a ".300 Magnum" seating collet, 1964 to 1965 vintage RCBS dies in .308 Winchester, 7mm Remington Magnum and ".22 Varminter" (.22-250) plus CH dies in .38 Special and .270 Winchester.
On closer inspection the Turret Press is the later aluminum frame press with the reinforcing bars, but hey ... it's STILL a Hollywood right?
Of course the "scofflaws" on the site will say "if there are no pictures then it didn't happen" so here is the proof for all to drool over ...

Holy smokes! What a find. Its deals like this which help me to delude myself into the belief that one day this will happen to me. That doesn't matter because it really did happen to you. Congratulations.

Yeah ... it was a great score ... ALMOST as good as the other "gift" I received a few years back. A friend / customer of mine came to me and said: "You're a reloader aren't you?". Yes, I replied. He said: "Come on out to my truck for a minute ..."
We went out to the parking lot where he'd pulled his truck up along side mine and he proceeded to unload a large wooden military storage crate from his truck into mine. He works at a local metal recyling yard and he said that some folks from out of town dropped it off to him that morning along with a bunch of household goods from an estate they were cleaning out. He brought it to me since he thought I might want to save it from going through their metal scrap shredder. When I opened the wooden case there was a slightly dirty, but complete Dillon 550B setup in 9mm!
I asked him what he wanted for it and he said: "Nothing ... just buy me a 6 pack of Guinness dark ale ... I like that stuff ..."
I went right out and bought him TWO six packs of Guinness and hand delivered it to him the next morning!

That's a Factory set up

In fact he's missing one of the crimp dies, or at least it is not shown in next to last Hollywood pic. They twist into the Multi-tool.

I started reloading back in the early '90's to feed my two hungry Smith .38's. When I retired from the NYCPD in '84 I put my two revolvers away in a locked box. I had a S&W Model 10 in 4" bbl and another in 2" bbl. When I moved to Vermont I had need of a decent truck gun and a carry gun and these filled the bill. I hardly ever fired them and I had no need to reload ammo.

When I moved to New Mexico the 4" was stolen and I swapped out the 2" for a Smith 586 with a 6" bbl. Then I moved to Las Vegas and I found myself wanting to shoot my lone revolver. A Taurus Model 85 2" bbl soon joined the family along with another 586, a Ruger Single Six and a Rossi 357 snubbie.

I had Santa bring me some reloading goodies and I was using a Lee Loadmaster to make up .38's by the bunches. At the same time I got into casting with a Lee 6 banger, coleman stove and a cast iron Dutch Oven. I struggled with the Loadmaster (press from He$$) for two years. My wife had drug me to a social gathering to meet her good friend and her husband. Normally those deals never work when the wives are pals prior to the husbands meeting for the first time.

However this time I had found a kindred sprit. Not only was he a shooter but also a reloader. We talked guns many times but I never even knew he reloaded ammo. A few months later I was over at his house and he opened a closet door and asked me to look thru the junk there and to take anything I wanted as he was not going to reload any more. He had been bitten by the treasure bug and was now running around the desert on a ATV with a metal detector and finding all kinds of Mungo.

The closet contained an almost unused Dillon 550B with a bunch of dies in various calibres and other assorted goodies. He would not take any money at all.

I immediately set it up and started to make better quality rounds from the get go and no more primer feeder problems. The Lee went South rapidly and I am sure that it is driving somebody else crazy now.

Now I have at least eight presses and 5 of them are Dillon Blue. Three Square Deals and an XL 650 have joined the herd along with a Lee 4 hole turret classic, RCBS Rockchucker, Lyman T turret press, Lee Challenger and a Lee hand press. I finally sprang for the big bucks and got a Star luber and a RCBS Pro Melter for casting and such.

If I had to do it all over again I would have started with the Rockchucker and the Star. Later on as my needs changed I would have gotten the Dillon 550 and then a buncha Square Deals. I find myself shooting less as my physical infirmities limit my mobility seriously and a walk down to my target at 300 yds is no longer an option.....I drive the car there and back. My next step is probably a motorized scooter with 4 or 6 wheels and rough ground capability.

Getting old ain't for the fainthearted.
