Tim,
Is that the one with the Octagon Barrel, gold reciever and curved butplate? .... Err, uhh...that I was holding in my hands a few hours ago at the gun shop?

Are we in the same neck of the woods? If so, Send me a PM.

Try 22grs. of 5744 and a 160gr. gas checked boolit --- Start lower and workup --- I use this in my Marlin 336 --- 30-30 Lever gun ---- Have gone as high as 22.5 grs. --- Mag_01

At this point in time its not where you have been but where are you going

A standard load used forever is 21 grains 4198, for jacketed or cast in the 160-180 range. ... felix

If it's J-words in the 30-30 WCF, I've used the Sierra 150 FN atop 33.0 grains of WW-748 for many years and 3 mule deer. Farther north where deer get bigger, I would opt for the Nosler Partition 170--but our local muleys and blacktails seldom exceed 150#. Old-school "cup-and-core" bullets get along well with the 30-30's velocity range and give decent controlled expansion with these modest velocities. I suspect that attribute has a lot to do with the caliber's popularity in the deer woods for 110+ years--bullets that perform predictably and capably in its caliber's velocity envelope.

It's been a long time since I've loaded jacketed in 30-30. If memory serves correctly I had good luck out of remington core loc 170s and sierra 170s with max charges of IMR 4064 in the marlins.

I've had good luck with H4895 behind a 150 Gr Hornady RN - I would tell you the charge, but according to my newer Speer book, it's a bit of an overcharge - not so from the Hodgdon book. It's been a good, accurate load from several Win M94's.

I have noticed the variance in the books, if you look close, Hornady may say its OK, and Speer wont, and reverse themselves on a different round. I guess thats another good reason to start under and work up.

My 788 load is a hundred and fifty grain W-W spitzer with a cannalure and twenty-seven grains of reloader seven . I don't know what the book calls it anymore but it's worked for years now . I started low and worked up to good accuracy and stopped .
Cast load is a hundred seventy five grain gas checked bullet from an NEI mold and thirty grains of "Special Ball " powder that I got a deal on . I worked it up using a small amount of filler to fill up the air space in the case and help it burn right . This load works well in a Marlin 336 with a four groove barrel .
