Hi folks,
I know I probably could have found something on a search but heck , I like talking with you guys!

Since I'm putting my Mauser 8mm cast boolit project on hold ( bore is just too chewed up)
I'm moving on to another project gun a recent acquisition: I received a very good Marlin 336 in 30-30 winchester (A family members deer rifle).
I also have a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington since the 60's that my Dad bought me to hunt deer with. That one holds a special place in my heart so when I took in the 30-30 I said to myself "what am I going to do with that?" So I cleaned it well and stored it away.

After reading this forum for a few years I was thinking of sending it out to be re-bored & re-chambered into something more interesting....however my pocket book is pretty empty. But I do have enough for dies & a mould for this lowly 30-30 and after reading the recent thread on one of the best guns for cast boolit shooting I made up my mind that I have to give it a try.....so

I 'm putting this out to those that would be interested in helping me: What load (Cast boolit) would you recommend for a guy that just wants to plink and maybe some informal target sooting with the 30-30 in Marlin 366 ( I've got all my pistol casting boolits & loads down pat & just want to try my hand at doing the same in a rifle) and from what I just read here, that the 30-30 is one of the easiest to load casts for.
I'm hoping that there will be some boolit I can cast that wouldn't need a gas check ( haven't done that yet) that I could shoot slow enough to enjoy this gun? Not intending on hunting deer or big game but if a ground critter pops his head up maybe I could take him on.

The rifle right now has a 4 x scope on it but since it is drilled & tapped for receiver sights I may try going that way even though my eyes are getting bad.
Any thoughts or suggestions will be much appreciated.

I use 16 gr of 2400 with a 165 RD bullet. Shoots quite well, runs around 1700 fps. Easy to shoot lots in a day.

Cast .32 caliber pistol bullets and a sprinkling of fast burning powder.

10 grains of Unique and a 165-170 RD boolit with real lube grooves and a gas check for about 1500 fps. Or what Btroj said.

The Lee 309-150-F over 2400 16.0 does great in a 336.

What sizing on the 32 cast? I have them on my bench right now.

I have always Loved the Ranch Dog design boolits However I have never had the pleasure of owing a RD mould. The RD boolits I have used were always cast by Jerry of Carolina Cast Bullets. I sure hope he gets back on his feet soon.
Are those RD moulds back in production? I thought I read something here about that?

Try dry powder coat on PB or GC sans check. Seat so the band is in the neck, any boolit that will feed OK. 15-16 of 2400 with some Dacron.

Accurate Molds has some copies of the various RD designs and makes a superior mould IMO. Plus you get your choice of cavity count and mould material.

Bullets for my 30WCF are sized .310" or .311" with or without gas check . I use a H&G number sixy-seven bullets and about six grains of 700-X for fun . Unique is handy with bullets at or above a hundred fifty grains For a bit more power and range . Then there's 2400 if you want more of the same , that round is not real fussy to load for . The Marlin , just use larger diameter bullets and it will be happy . My Marlin is an old four groove and even it likes fat bullets .

My favorite plinking load for the 30-30 is the 115gr 311008 sized to .310 over 8 grains of Unique. Shoots like a .22 (and is also cheaper at todays 22 cost). I use this load for the chickens at the levergun silhouette matches...

if your on a real budget but want to enjoy some thurdy thurdy shootin

I run the Lee c309-170rf without a check over 6.3 gr power pistol , most use unique right about 7gr and light it off with a large pistol primer
I am just guessing but 13-1400 fps I don't have a chronograph

minute of squirrel head at 50 yards and will ring the 10 inch steel plate at 100 with a satisfying sound all day

I have put a Williams 5d peep on the receiver and a globe sight on the front It makes a nice pleasant gun to shoot for fun at just the price of powder and primer , casting from COWW I got with my last set of tires

I did just buy the lee tl314-90swc I will let you know hos that goes , it should be here this week

There is plenty of discussion going on this thread currently:

I use the Lee TL-314-90-SWC with 7.0grains Trail Boss, that is it in the avatar picture.
